Issues with Amagi

In addition to some issues with the model and the stat card having an incorrect displacement, there are a couple inaccuracies with Amagi’s turrets and guns. First off, the elevation on the new 41cm turret design that was to be used for the Amagi and Tosa classes was increased to -3/+35 degrees, rather than the -5/+30 of the original Nagato-class turrets. The armor for these turrets is also likely inaccurate, as the turrets intended for the class were used as coastal batteries and were equipped with 12 inch frontal armor, 12 inch side armor, and 4 inch roof armor, as according to “Survey of Japanese Seacoast Artillery, 1946” by US Army. The lack of time-fuse shells for the 120mm anti-air battery is also a major issue that negatively affects its performance.

Amagi is… well… It’s a mess, to put it lightly. According to the devs, they based it on the 1919 Preliminary Drawings rather than the finalized design. However, even considering that the turrets seen aboard are the 1930s Nagato-class refit turrets, the shielded 120mm turrets are 1930s models as intended for the Aoba-class. Unfortunately, most of this stuff has been reported, and aside from the main battery model issue all have been labeled as “Not a bug due to 1919 Preliminary designs.” Even the time-traveling 120s

The main caliber turret model being the Nagato refit model is actually correct, as the turrets that they were refitted with were actually the exact same ones that had been built for the Tosa and Amagi classes. The only difference is that the turrets on the modernized Nagato class have thicker armor and a further increased elevation up to +43 degrees. And those 120mm guns actually entered service in 1921, although I’m not sure about the shielded mounts.

Honestly at what point are they just gonna start doing fictional refits for ships that weren’t built

That is, essentially, what the Kronshtadt is.

Is it?

The 305s were originally planned under Project 69 which is what the game represents it as.

The other version with the German guns is Project 69I.

Unless there was something else that I’m missing, like changes in the AA armament, she isn’t under a fictional refit, she was planned like that.

I wasn’t talking about the main guns. I was referring to how little was completed and how everything including tonnage and armor layout kept changing due to not being able to source materials. It can be essentially whatever “refit” Gaijin chooses to use. That was my only point.

ah, my mistake then

It was mostly a joke poking fun at the Kronshtadt that didn’t land well.

I just realized I never responded here, oops lol. So, in essence, as we discussed in the General HQ chat, the Amagi turrets have a different design than those of the Kaga class. Nagato/Mutsu received Kaga/Tosa’s turret in their refit, but the turrets intended for Amagi/Akagi had been converted into Coastal Defense turrets by then.

Here’s a neat diagram of the turret used as a Coastal Defense Gun from the turret model report (Note the curved faceplate in the front, which is another difference between the Nagato/Kaga turrets and those of Amagi)

As for the 12cm guns, aye, those entered service in 1921 as an open mount rather than the shielded one we have onboard Amagi in the game. From what I recall, those first popped up on Aoba in the 30s

In reality, Amagi, as planned, would have used these:
