Is War Thunder a grindy game?

I’ve been satisfied with the pace of progression up until Rank III in ground vehicles, I don’t have interest in Naval or Air. But, from Rank IV onwards, everything feels very slow. Everything costs higher, new vehicles, switching crews, buying upgrades etc. The progression has slown to a crawl and I don’t like how much I have to grind for a single vehicle. Does it get worse further on?

You’ve answered your own question =>

That’s the way it is. If you choose to work your way to the upper tiers, you need to bank some serious SL. I spent many weeks just playing a 5.7 lineup back in the day just to have enough SL to be able to play comfortably, without having to watch the my balance of SL dwindle. I lucked out at one point, and got a 1 million SL in the daily login, and paying for a Premium account (during sales) has ensured that I’ll never have a negative SL game and maximize RP and SL.

But yes, it’s a grindy game, although there are options to move up (Join a squadron and obtain Squadron vehicles, or purchase premium vehicles at different BRs).

Personally I still enjoy the game and don’t really grind for the higher tier vehicles anymore. I have a lot of vehicles to research, but I’ve just created a few various lineups at different tiers for my favorite vehicles for each country and just bounce back and forth between them, and no longer worry about the grind.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes, and don’t listen to those lads who rationalise Gaijin’s grind with ‘games with worse grind’
There could be worse, but War Thunder is also kinda grindy game.

It does seem like other games, the Air and Naval has the same grind problem? I played a few games in Naval, and I got way more silver lions and XP per game

War Thunder unironically might be one of the worst grinds for me. And it seems specific to ground game, because I saw that Naval gives way more SL and XP per match.

Because Naval has fewer playerbase than Air or Ground.
So Gaijin wants to bait them with cheap premium boats with a high SL multiplier.

All three game modes are awful if we only see the grindy side
But the ground might be worse for the reward amount

This is debatable and I don’t think arguing which is worst bc all three grinds are equally arse.

Air is a much faster grind. 1 or 2 kills in air is about 6 kills on ground

Yes it is, next question.

If you reached ground rank 3, you are where the fun is. No need to move much higher.

It is if you want to grind your rank to the top, or you can do like I did for quite a long time, you stay in your comfort zone (br) and just enjoy the game. Getting a couple of premium vehicles will help on both grind and SL income and the best part… you don’t necessarily need to spend money, quite often there are events (or the warbound shop) where you can get some interesting vehicles too.

While premium vehicles are very useful, especially for increased SL income, premium time is better. Especially if you are trying to unlock and spade new tech tree vehicles. Premium Time gives you bonuses to everything you play.

Premium Time + Premium Vehicles is the best though, for RP’s and SL’s. Both their bonuses stack on top of each other.

Premium time will be going on sale very shortly, during the last week of April/first week of May. You can get 180 days of premium time for 20. Very reasonable imo. It will save you hundreds or thousands of hours of time compared to grinding without premium time. Premium time goes on sale twice a year, so you can get 180 days now and another 180 days in ~6 months during the next big sale. So, you can keep it going 365 days a year if you buy 180 days during each sale. You can get 365 days of time in game for Golden Eagles, but it only saves a couple/few 's a year, and you have to buy larger batches of GE’s first. Easier and more simply to just buy the 180 days for $20 on the store.

I would say go for it if you want to buy one or more premium vehicles too, but absolutely get premium time at the very least.

Link to 180 days of premium account time below. It is NOT on sale yet. Watch the news/forums for the start of the sales:

Extremely

A talisman will help too. With the combo talisman (on rank VIII) and premium time I’ve unlocked all rank IX in less than a week, plus spaded the talismaned vehicles and lead its crew to ace, lol

So, talismans do help, but they do not add the 2.0x SL boost that premium vehicles give.

Second, only premium vehicles can grind all the way down to Rank 1 at max efficiency, whereas a vehicle with an added talisman will only grind at max eff. 1 rank below, and 1 rank above.

Imo, dollar for dollar, premium vehicles are better than talismans. And I would not even consider putting a talisman on a vehicle unless it was during the big sale. Even then, I greatly prefer store pack premiums on sale, as you get some premium time and a handful of GE’s at the same time.

Whichever way someone wants to do it though, spending a little bit of money for Premium Account Time, Premium Vehicles, and/or Talismans is the way to go. Trying to grind the game “for free” is a waste of time. If something is “free” then YOU are the product. You take 2x-4x+ longer and become food for everyone else. Get Premium Time, enjoy the grind 👍

What the heck is that formatting lmao. Putting 2x $'s makes it a funny text format 😂

This is also true, but I’ve already had premiums on lower ranks and a talisman is way cheaper than a premium vehicle. Ofc without the benefit of SL income and repair cost.

Let me try dat

Poooor soul. I tought you were ragebaiting. Warthunder is a textbook grindy game.

Over 100 good games/ 30+ hours in game time with premium account to grind one ground TT vic

Thats with 4k rp a game and a premium account- each game 10 mins. Id be lucky to average that (could probably double it) so personally its going to take 60- 120 hours per TT vic!!! Ground is grindy.
