Is it possible to talk about how....... Bad the player base has gotten?

I dislike the idea that this is a teamwork issue because it implies that I’m somehow camping / disregarding the team when not only do I have the most kills, but also the least deaths and the most caps more often than not. It’s not even people who leave after one death, often times they’ll repeatedly spawn in and get farmed for SP and then I have to fight enemies who get 4-7 respawns because my team only knows how to push W-key to the same spot on the map.

To be fair, Warthunder makes absolutely no attempt to explain how air combat works at all. You can play 1000 games and what works vs what doesn’t will never be revealed to you. Even then, matches are overcrowded and the best you can hope for is that at the end of the missile dump you’re somehow in position to capitalize on the furball for a while.

Even if you could raise everyone’s competency by 10-20% the outcome would still be largely the same because of the meta. It’s easier to get slightly more effective at spamming missiles then it is to get slightly more effective at surviving them.

Getting good “teammates” most times seems to be the exception and not the rule. Also, despite marketing WT as a team oriented game, this is somewhat laughable. I make every effort to be a team player. Repairing teammates, help firefighting for those who haven’t unlocked that mod yet. Scouting enemies. Dropping artillery on enemy positions. Shooting smoke shells to provide cover or to obscure snipers. Watching/covering the flanks. Hop in SPAA when needed to clear the skies and or disrupt pilots from killing my teammates. Take the capture points and killing enemies. I do all these things, despite the meager rewards, while trying to survive the battle. I’d prefer to win.

And what happens? Players ignore objectives and rush to spawn camp and rack up their k/d. Sure someone got 11 kills but they lost the battle. Usually they leave after 1death. This also denies the additional victory bonus for themselves and their teammates. Had supposed teammates push me into enemy fire. Or push me out of a location because that’s where they want to be. Popping smoke in the beginning of the battle while we’re all getting out of spawn. Don’t repair teammates. Don’t cap.

A large part of the problem, which there are many in this game, imo are the ground maps. These maps, despite making them “pretty” like they are doing with Stalingrad now, have gotten worse. Very few maps are suitable for high tier ground combat. Most are far too small for modern combat vehicles. Even the WWII maps are poorly designed. The capture points are way too small which is like shooting fish in a barrel for CAS. No map should have a single spawn point. Ever. Spawn locations are too close. The maps are old and tired. Certain maps, already mentioned in this thread, the battle is predetermined in most instances. Abandoned Factory and Berlin are the best examples. It’s gotten to the point where I’d rather play Attica than the other 2. Anyone reading this actually have a battle that goes longer than 15 to 20 minutes? Yeah, me neither.

Better rewards for scouting, repairing/firefighting, assists and capturing points might help but who knows. Some better designed maps might help as well. Unfortunately it seems that providing new maps for ground combat is permanently on the back burner. Sure some new vehicles are fun but playing the same maps over and over again is very boring. Gaijin doesn’t make money on maps so probably why we haven’t seen anything new except for polishing maps we already have. 😴

Should I mention a new game mode for ground combat? 😬 Anywho, thanks for reading and happy hunting. ☠️

The games lately almost always consist of a slaughtering team and a slaughtered team, where sometimes a player manages to intercept the enemy lemming train, and ends the game with 14 casualties. Regarding the maps, there is not much to say, filthy garbage all, all full of obstacles, encouraging hiding and using the third-person image to kill people who cannot see you, with no possibility of flanking due to the CQC design of the maps and the extreme sound of the engines, and all this added to the fact that the players almost all go to the same point on a map, without spreading out across that small map to cover different areas where the enemy can pass.

The flip side of that is maps like this:
Carpathians
Where if you don’t take control the ruined castle, you are getting locked into your spawn… especially if you are on the blue side. Red side you can usually still slip out of the lower spawn, but the cap point is still a shooting gallery.

Ugh, I hate that map. Ever since they cancelled line 7, this map has been absolute garbage.

That is why a proper SBMM is needed

Keep in mind that the game has reached a huge randomness due to the amount of obstacles on the map and the same damage and penetration model. What I mean is, I am an average player, neither good nor bad, but in 10 games I can in the first game kill seven without losing a tank and in the next four games kill a tank and lose three or four, and in the next two kill two and lose two tanks and in the other three kill four or five and lose two or three tanks, because in this game even the worst can make a game killing twelve enemies. The key to playing well is knowing how to position yourself on the map, covering as much area as possible of the map, and having teammates who do the same in other areas, to advance controlling the terrain, and this has not happened for years.

Good post!

Every time I start this map I tell team to grab the castle. Get ignored 50-75% of the time, and our team loses.

Yeah, luck has a LOT to do with how you and your team does.
I’m just an average player and typically fall in that range in scoring.

But sometimes the stars align…
Was playing Russia the other day and ended up on Jungle. Oh crap! Hills and valleys.

I started with my KV-1S and went to the middle cap on the hill and fought it out with multiple enemies finally winning out and capping. Killed the next 3 or 4 that tried to take it.
By that time our team was slowly taking over the map. I moved down the hill in my heavy and by the time I was finally destroyed I had 14 kills.

Highest kill rate I’ve ever had. In a Russian tank, with crap gun depression on Jungle. Go figure…

i love lock in rounds where i do amazing and then right after i go on a 10 game losing streak

I depend on my team CAS support or spaa defence in battles.

Good map for big bomb CAS.

“Why does people one death leave?”

k/d is pretty easily skewed in this game. You earn a “death” regardless of whether you enter a game or not once it is offered. As an example never play Conquest and only rarely player Battles, and there are 4 maps I simply don’t play. So in all those situations I just “Return to Hanger” at the start screen before the battle begins and then go try again with another country tank. Point being over 2/3 of the games I am offered, I generate a “death” without even entering.

Not sure how many people do this, but it’s an example of how easily distorted the stat is

  • bad maps
  • repeated maps
  • too many uptiers
  • team not playing the battle mode
  • map not meeting the battle-pass mission (ex: cap streak required on a single-cap map)
  • many players have already left the battle - why spawn another when you have no chance

I dont think you can generate death on vehicle you dont spawn ;)

I will test that tommorow but im like 90% sure.

people who prioritise bombers or easy targets then rtb to preserve k/d in a proficient fighter are a scourge and very common.

I need help where is it? - it is a level 100 in a premium or meta aircraft going for easy targets and rtb’ing and letting everyone else deal with the actual threat that he is best equipped to deal with then pretending he is amazing.
