Is Great Britain the worst GRB nation in game?

Great Britain Isn’t Very… Great

I’ve played a good chunk of the game at this point USA, Germany, Russia, Japan, Sweden, and Israel. China, Italy, and France are still on the list, but I’ve seen enough to compare. And after grinding Great Britain, I’ve come to a conclusion: it’s the worst tree in the game.

To be clear, I’m not counting the vehicles Britain borrows from other nations. Those have been its saving grace, and they shouldn’t get credit for what Britain itself built. The genuinely British gems are few, the Avenger, the Comet, the Falcon, and the Fox (which I never even unlocked). I can already feel the challenger not have 12.7mm is going to be an utter disappoint.

The problem isn’t that British tanks are unbalanced. Some nations are well-rounded: good at everything, exceptional at nothing. Others are lopsided but dominant in their specialty. Britain somehow managed to be bad at everything and good at nothing.

Armor and Mobility

At low BRs you actually get decent armor and workable shells, provided you’re running solid shot. But the further you climb, the worse it gets.

I don’t know whether Britain genuinely fielded the worst engines available in real life, but in game their mediums and heavies feel underpowered next to almost every other tree. British mobility handles like walking out of a pub and hoping you make it home before the police notice you’re drunk it’s vague, floaty, and never quite going where you pointed it.

Firepower

This is the worst firepower in the game, and it comes down to how War Thunder models damage rather than anything about the guns themselves.

In real life, a shell punching through a tank usually meant the crew bailed out. In game, it means you get to remove crew members one at a time with APDS while the enemy keeps shooting back. Unless you find the ammo rack, you’re not a tank commander you’re an assist machine not better than bringing light tank with no weapons.

It gets worse as you climb. British tanks lack meaningful 12.7 mm machine guns, while enemy crews get larger, often four or more, and commanders gain gunner override, which makes every one of your shots more precise and every movement of yours a potential death sentence if you’re not careful. If a light tank catches you out, you’d better not miss.

Ammunition

APFSDS eventually arrives at high BR, which is the only ammunition that matters up there. Before that, Britain gives you HESH.

HESH is the least reliable round in the game, and pairing it with some of the worst reloads is a fast way back to the hangar. APDS is serviceable, solid shot is better, and HESH isn’t worth the slot except that with no 12.7 mm to fall back on, you end up bringing some anyway.

Conclusion

I don’t think anyone should grind this tree unless they’re bored or genuinely love British tanks. Every step forward mostly gets you a worse tank than the one before it. The fact Gajin has to give them a Trophy System that can counter APFSDS at top tier makes a lot more sense since I can already feel the utter disappoint from the challenger once I unlock it.

Great Britain has managed to be the single worst grind in the game, and I’m only finishing it out of stubbornness to have ALL the Abrams tanks in my collection. With other trees having better or good enough tanks, Great Britain is honestly just Britain.

Maybe there’s some changes to the games mechanics that need to be visited or revisited.

In terms of the lack of mobility, Gaijin have essentially completely neglected giving Britain 99% of its light tanks, armoured cars, and up-engined medium tanks. From our WW2 kit, like the AECs, Staghounds, Coventrys, our Chaffees, hell even the Boarhound, to the cold war, with the Scorpion, Saladin (upgunned option sare available to avoid 76mm HESH hell), Simba, Alvis Piranha, Valkyr, Ferret, and more, all are still absent.

Then you have the more mobile medium/MBT options, with the Vickers Retrofit Centurion packages with new engines, the 1200hp Chieftain with the FV4030/2, the Vickers Mk 1 and 3 improved, both with new engines, as well as another 1500hp MBT option with the Vickers Mk 7/2.

The domestic mobility capabilities of the British tree have been unbelievably neglected.

Have they entertained adding those or are they saying it’s not happening?

Britain has got several issues yes. mostly as our armoured warfare design doctrine doesnt really work in a video game to a more extreme degree than most nations designs. post ww2 all our stuff is in excess of 15-25 years older than its BR peers too because we were the spearhead in the evolution of western tank design last century.

APDS lacks the power it ought and APHE overperforms making the disparity between solid shot and APHE far too extreme vs reality. people dont learn to aim when using APHE so the lackluster damage of non explosive shot it worse than it ought to be.

the main sticker i think that makes britain a suffer nation for many is that (other than south africa) we have been neglected of our light tanks.

it took years to get Scimitar and Fox, and we are still missing Scorpion, which would be an ideal 5.3 light tank if gaijin doesnt gimp HESH or a 4.7 light if the HESH is gimped to gaijins understanding of non russian tech.

If APHE didnt overperform, solid shot did more than sod all, HESH worked and our vehicles were modelled right we would do ok.

We also need more CVRT variants, lots of them

well if we are talking about topest tier they get some good linups like t-90 , chally 3, and a sepv3

worse overall vs bringing a megatron tbh. its also using the cruddy old CR2 damage model that doesnt even match the visual model at all.

but you guys got a “stolen” m1a1 AIM squadron and “stolen” sepv3 those are pretty good right

yeah but those aren’t British, they don’t have a T-90 only SepV3 and Challys. Also they’re not stolen, they were purchased.

our aussie abrams are by far the best top tier MBTs we have access to, leopard 2 is still a better tank in WT but the AIM and SEPv3 are carrying hard

not stolen btw. Actively purchased by the Commonwealth of Australia, a British (independent) colony thats also a subtree of the UK in war thunder

If war thunder was in any way accurate, GB would be a major nation alongside usa, germany, and the ussr. But unfortunately, despite being the creators of a lot of the newest armor technology, gaijin insists on treating them like a minor nation. And it shows.

(Although Italy is probably the worst nation)

If britain was treated the same as russia… Wouldnt be much reason to play any other tree, especially with additions via the Empire/Commonwealth.

Britain and France easily have the potential to be as big and scary in tree size as USA/ USSR and easily germany but are trapped getting the italy treatment quite often.

As an Irish person, I honestly wouldn’t mind having some Irish vehicles be added to the UK tree.

I mean we had that Churchill with a spitfire engine.

political can of worms ignored, it would be the most logical place to put irish kit for the most part. Would like to see some more things than Le Orla represented.

I mean the only other feasible tree would be France, our army fielded AMLs and may be getting the EBRC Jaguar in the future, and Sweden could get the L180 armoured car and L60 light tank for their reserve.

sound fire. how much horsepower does it have?

About 1290 hp (Merlin 61)
