I enjoy playing the IRIS-T SLM, but I always wonder why it can’t destroy helicopters even when I have a continuous lock on the target. Shouldn’t it be able to destroy the heli via datalink? Are there any strategies for taking them down?
Only 2 effective ways to kill helis at top tier.
-
SALCOS or Beam riding missiles where you turn your radar off and guide it to the target (effective since they usually don’t drop without warning)
-
HE-VT or equivalent with target tracking since it doesn’t trigger warnings.
The Radar guided SAMs or equivalent are terrible at performing anything against helicopters in game due to overpowered IRCCM, and monetary gain from players grinding helicopters in order to play something broken.
If you see more than 3-4 helicopters and your teams getting wiped just leave the game.
Thanks for the information, but will anything be done about this in the future? for balancing reasons? It would be a bit silly if a 12.7 Br AA couldn’t destroy helicopters.
All roads lead to decompression but compression leads to monetary gain. I don’t believe anything will be done for a while. As of right now that’s all you can do for the most part. Some maps are extremely strong for helicopters and some are okay. Best advice is wreck the enemy before so they can’t spawn their helicopters
Fairly sure every missile in game shuts off it’s datalink when it goes terminal.
From what I understand the IOG should keep the missile on an intercept if the heli doesn’t change it’s course, but DIRCM in game apparently doesn’t just burn out the seeker but deflects the missile too.
There is also the issue where heli rotors are invisible to PD radars so they cannot be detected while hovering.
The whole things a mess.
