Like everyone knows, the Eldenhet 98 is somewhat lacking compared to the IRIS-T SLM in the German tree, Mainly because of the lack of missiles and the mediocre performance of the BvS 410 chassi at the current moment.
But what if the Eldenhet 98 didn’t have these disadvantages?
One way to solve this issue would be to simply get rid of the Giraffe 1X radar on the command module. Then how exactly would the Eldenhet 98 target aircraft? Let me introduce you to the UndE 23 (Underrättelseenhet 23). The UndE 23 uses the MAN KAT 8x8 10t truck, the same as the IRIS-T SLM in the german tree, aswell as the FlaRakRad.
Though unlike the IRIS-T SLM that features the TRML radar, the UndE 23 uses it’s own radar system that can share information with Eldenhet 98 units.
The addition of the UndE 23 would also allow for the Eldenhet 98 to become a Transporter Erector Launcher instead of it’s own vehicle, which in turn fixes the ammunition issue since you’re now able to spawn two of them, bringing the previous total of eight IRIS-Ts (+ another additional 8 if you have a backup) to 16 IRIS-T missiles.
Then there is the elephant in the room; the UndE 23’s radar being elevated high above the vehicle. This would, in theory, allow both the launchers and the radar vehicle to remain mostly hidden behind tall objects while still having the ability to fire. The obvious downside to this however is that, to use the radar, the radar needs to be extended, which makes it visible from very far away and an easy target.
So while the Eldenhet 98 at the current moment is somewhat capable (but not by much) on it’s own, if it’s ever going to be comparable to the IRIS-T SLM, then it should be seperated into a TEL and TADS, and recieve a better radar platform over the Giraffe 1X.
