So over the past few years the PVE modes for War Thunder have gone an insane amount of time receiving no updates to them beyond what vehicles can be seen in them. Their gameplay has become incredibly stale and very poorly unbalanced and dare i say require an entire rework for the modern age of War Thunder and can take some cues from Armored Warfare.
Ground Assault 2.0
The Ground Arcade Assault mode can see a rather hefty rework away from just a singular defense mission. Thanks to already having numerous maps in the game that are decently large a multitude of them can be tweaked in order to have a series of missions happen on them throughout the match. An example can be on Alaska, where you have to clear enemy AI (made up of random vehicles from inside the bracket) before moving to the center of the map to capture a point that is being guarded by AI tanks and after catching it have to defend it for a short amount of time from enemy AI advancing on it. After that can have a final part of the mission being to clear out enemy artillery vehicles at one of the further area’s of the map which are being guarded by more elite tanks of the BR and clearing them out will finish the mission
(example map of task locations)

Air Assault 2.0
Air Assault 2.0 in my opinion can easily be made into something similar to the Heli PVE mode that is currently in the game, however include more AI aircraft in it such as enemy fighters and interceptors to warrant bringing in something such as a fast bomber to avoid enemy aircraft while you bomb a base, or a fighter to support an friendly bomber or strike aircraft being attacked. Strike aircraft would have the task of attacking tasks such as bases, Convoys, and the “battles”. These modes would as well make it much easier to play certain aircraft that normally are incredibly difficult to play due to underlying problems such as being far too slow to compete with other aircraft in other modes and gives them an area to grind out modifications far easier

And Heli PVE because that gamemode is so monotonous its cancer. feels like ground assault is better for it sometimes
This thread is primarily for Ground and Air Assault modes which are much more severe in how bad they are. I also have not been able to think of a proper updating for Heli PVE

All aspects of PvE in War Thunder are outdated. The AI are badly modeled and there is a real lack of interesting PvE objective types. There is so much that could be done and this doesnt just go for the PvE gamemodes but the PvPvE gamemodes too

yes theres problems with the game as a whole, however this thread is specifically regarding the purely PVE modes so dont steer it off topic
I don’t hate the current format of Ground Assault, my biggest tip would just be to shave 5-10 minutes off the average game and boot Sinai out of rotation (or move the objective somewhere so you don’t spawn like fish in a barrel). Funnily enough: your suggestion matches the layout and style of a PvE gamemode that was tested a few years ago… and then never seen again. It was better, thematic and I’d like to see it alongside the current Tank Assault queue rather than just replacing it.
Air Assault needs an overhaul, it’s very bland just flying after formations of strategic bombers and straight flying attackers, not to mention the obvious problem of J2Ms being teamed with F-14 Tomcats. I’d keep the objective defence, but:
- change the targets to ground columns, strike aircraft, enemy fighters that go after players to keep things interesting
- design it so a team has to work together allocating players between objectives rather than all chasing one wave.
Heli PvE is stale like Air Assault, there’s no real threat to the player beyond the game being cheap and spawning Gepards underneath you, I was actually sad when they removed the Rolands from the bases; flying NoE using terrain to hide your approach, popping up close and destroying them with rockets, occasionally having to jink a missile was fun, and destroying the base defences gave extra points, there were only a few bases where it was nigh impossible to do this (most of them on Rocky Canyon, which like Tank Assault Sinai is on my **** list for a few reasons). Teams are often so large with so little to do it often becomes PvP fighting with your own team for scraps.
- shrink teamsizes down to 4-6 players
- reformat Rocky Canyon so it’s normal like the other maps, instead of the M60s and M113s being crewed by Vasily Zaitsev sniping your pilot and blowing your engines out from 2,000m away with a single shot from a .50 cal
- have a defined “enemy territory” where convoys spawn from so you don’t get Surprise Geparded (or make them spawn from the destroyable target bases)
- ensure there’s at least 2 enemy convoys at all times on different sides of the map
- make the convoy Gepards less insane when you’re close and/or flying low (or replace them with ZSUs) so ATGMless Helis like AH-1Gs or stock AH-1Fs can do something
- Split into 3 tiers instead of 2, low tier being Scout/Alluoette/Mi-4 etc, mid-tier being Bo-105/Hind/AH-1F etc, top tier being AH-64/Mi-28/Tiger etc
- the low tier bracket should feature smaller maps with more soft targets like trucks/howitzers/AT guns
- Add the SEAD gamemodes S-75 systems to mid-high tier so I can see premium spaceclimbers get slapped
- 1.5x-2x the rewards; they’re really bad for module/vehicle requirements even with boosters

It’s not unrelated though.
What is needed to make more interesting and engaging PvE content is improved AIs for PvE vehicles and an overhaul of how objectives are done. Ideally with some kind of dynamic element (i.e, objective 1 unlocks objective 2, objective 2 unlocks objective 3, etc etc) and completing objectives has an overall impact on the actual progression of the match. This does not only apply to the assault game modes, but all elements of PvE in war thunder
Carrier Ops would be a dream PVE mode, especially in sim. I need those BF3 campaign vibes!

I remember 1942 had a carrier battle map at some point.
1942 was so good.
