Ijtihad-class patrol boat: Born in Bremen-Vegesack, made in Brunei

The Ijtihad class patrol boats are German made inshore patrol boats built for the Brunei navy.

All 4 vessels were layed down in 2009. KBD Ijtihad and Berkat were commissioned in March 2010 while KBD Afiat and Syafaat were commissioned in August 2010. All 4 were built in Bremen-Vegesack by Lürssen Werft.

During 2011, KDB Syafaat and KDB Ijtihad would join RSS Stalwart in Exercise Pelican.

KDB Afiat with KDB Syafaat would exercise with KRI Barakuda KRI Lemadang as part of Exercise HELANG LAUT 13/12 from the 19th to the 23rd of March 2012.

In 2014, KDB Berkat would suffer a collision with car carrier Trans Future 2 but didn’t suffer any severe damage.

In 2017, Afiat would successfully rescue stranded fishermen. The first occasion would be on the 5th of June, saving 3 fishermen stranded 2 nautical miles of the shores of Tutong shore. The second instance happed on June 13th, KDB Afiat rescued 5 stranded fishermen stranded at sea around 2am, also recovering the boat that suffered an engine failure 10 nautical miles north of Champion Oilfield.

KDB Berkat took part in CARAT 2018 alongside KDB Darulaman, USNS Fall Rive and USS Emory S. Land in the South China Sea to strengthen ties with the USA.

KDB Berkat would join with KDM Darulaman once again in 2018 in PENGUIN 2018 exercising with HMAS Launceston. KDB Berkat would again exercise in 2018 with HMS Montrose.

As of writing all 4 boats remain in service.
