IJN Tosa - Short Review

Although never completed due to the Washington Naval Treaty, the IJN Tosa event ship is, in my opinion, the best Japanese high tier ship in the game.

If you are looking for a ship to level the last few tiers in the Japanese blue water tree, it’s definitely worth picking up on the market. It has the great guns of the Amagi and Mutsu while having much better armor. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a magazine detonation, and shell room detonations are rare.

It has no AA protection to speak of, but let’s face it, neither do most Japanese ships as the 25mm guns are wholly inadequate unless in laughably huge numbers.

Crew size is more than adequate being the same as the Mutsu. Speed is the same as Mutsu and only 7 km/h slower than Amagi. It’s also surprisingly maneuverable for a ship of its size and age.

As mentioned, the 410mm guns with 24 second ace reload are a pleasure to use. They hit hard, have plenty of penetration, and decent explosive filler. The .05 second fuse delay is also good for post pen damage.

With lack of AA being its only real weakness, you can feel confident taking her into battle against even most 8.7 ships. It’s a good candidate for a talisman, and even un-spaded will do very well after unlocking the first APC shell.

Given the current state of Yamato and Musashi, I would much rather play the Tosa, as it’s a very fun and capable ship. The Tosa, Mutsu, Amagi lineup is one of the best in the game, if not the best, at 8.0.

An issue I have noticed with Tosa is even less than half ammo keeps both magazine and Shellroom full and I’m not sure why.

Tosa seems to only empty a magazine when it is literally fully empty. Even just having one reload makes the DM show a full magazine.

Nah Tosa should be renamed Trasha. every hit results in a fire and eventual magazine detonation, the shells can barely penetrate anything, best is maybe causing barbette fires but at a vastly lower rate than other ships. the guns are so inaccurate trying to aim for ammo results in shells hitting anywhere from the tip of the bow to midships, and short/far by 100m when aiming for barbettes. Every game is an uptier against IOWAs that take no damage from the pathetic guns, and Soyuzs that 1 shot you. The Magazines show full even at 25% shell load. The only thing this trash boat has a chance against are Kronshadts and those are floating ammoracks.

Tosa survives multiple mag detonations whenever I actually bother to bring her out. Nothing except another Tosa, Mutsu, SoDak or Nagato can actually challenge her at the ranges she excels at.

Not my experience. The US BBs light fires every 5 seconds , pretty much everything else lights fires too. Trasha can’t hit anything accurately hit anything beyond about 12km, let alone if they make any effort to dodge, any fast battleship or battlecruiser results in nothing but misses. The AP has piss poor post pen, the HE has piss poor effectiveness, the secondaries are half decent sap but dont have the same drop and often miss short aiming the same as the main, and only have sap, no he, or AA he. The torpedoes are useless and wrong.

It has 0 maneuvablilty, granted I don’t have mobility modules yet, it takes like 5 minutes to turn around no lie.

It might be a little more survivable than I credit it for, but the guns are trash, the MM is garbage, every match is against 8.7s which wipe out the survivability any closer than like 14km.

The APCBC No 3 is garbage. No 5 is borderline doomsday shells. No 5 can and will maul anything that isn’t an Iowa or a Soyuz. 8.3 to 7.0 bracket there is literally nothing to fear as a Tosa except a plane.

Fixed angle torpedoes are worthless on every battleship barring Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Sure, there’s some very rare occasions where you can get a very cheeky torp kill but the range is often pitiful and not worth the detonation risk.

Yeah, against battleships and battlecruisers.

For a ship of her size, she turns surprisingly well even without rudder. With upgraded rudder, she turns better than most other ships in her displacement class.

I don’t use my Tosa often because she’s oppressive against basically anything that isn’t a Soyuz or an Iowa. And 24 seconds reload aced on some of the best guns in the game really is obnoxious.

I’m going to be honest with my experience Tosa every time I play her no matter how many times shells blew up my front guns she kept repairing like nothing happened, last match with her I got up tier to 8.7 with her and some how got 7.5 kills with her and 1 air kills which was by accident since it was a Hryoplane that Bismarck deployed (it look like Bismarck from what I remember.) and it immediately got hit by my round. But in my opinion she feels way more tanky then she be.

This is par for the course for the Kongous, Nagatos and Tosa. Multiple magazine detonations and still enough crew to continue firing and sailing.

Had a match ages ago where I lost turrets 1 through 3 on Mutsu and still managed to not sink. No other ship can get away with this sort of silliness except the 1910s~1920s IJN BBs.
