Suggestion No.95

G’day lads. I want to suggest a missile AA, with 3 different missile options for different ranges, which are used on the Barak MX Land On the Move :)

Description:

Spoiler

The Barak MX Land On The Move is a mobile, integrated air and missile defense system developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to protect moving land forces against a wide array of airborne threats while remaining fully operational during movement. Unlike traditional systems (that require stationary deployment), this variant of the Barak MX is designed to perform detection, command and control, and interception while on the move. The system is modular and can be configured with any combination of its core components: the Battle Management Center (BMC), which creates a unified aerial picture and coordinates operations; vertical-launch interceptors with ranges of 35km (MRAD), 70km (LRAD), and 150km (ER) that offer 360° coverage and high maneuverability (up to 50G specifically). It also has mobile sensors such as the ELM-2138 AESA radar, although the bigger, though longer range ELM-2084 is also optional to be used. The Barak MX Land On The Move operates effectively in all weather conditions, day or night, and can engage multiple types of threats including fighter jets, cruise missiles, UAVs, helicopters, and gliding bombs.

Also, for the sake of not repeating it over and over, I’ll be calling the system LOTM for the rest of the suggestion.

History:

Spoiler

The Barak missile system originated in the 80s as a joint project between Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Rafael to develop a naval defense missile capable of intercepting anti ship threats. The result was the Barak-1, which entered service with the Israeli Navy in 1992 and was later exported to countries including India and Chile.

In the early 2000s, Israel and India initiated a joint development program for a more advanced system, the Barak-8. It was designed to provide medium to long range air defense for both naval and land platforms. The project was led by IAI again and by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with manufacturing support from Bharat Dynamics Limited and other Indian firms. The Barak-8 underwent successful testing in 2009 and 2014, and was officially inducted into service by both nations in 2016.

The concept for a combined, modular air defense system, the Barak MX, was conceived around 2013 by Boaz Levy, then head of IAI’s Missile and Space Division. Levy sketched the initial design by hand, envisioning a system with three missile variants covering short, medium, and long ranges. This sketch became the blueprint for the Barak MX.

Development of Barak MX accelerated in the late 2010s, which ended up in its public unveiling in the early 2020s. It has since been adopted by several countries and deployed on platforms such as Israel’s Sa’ar 6 corvettes.

Armaments:

Spoiler

While the Barak MX Land On The Move is noted to only use the Barak MR/MRAD and LR/LRAD, the brochure of the MX system says the launcher can use all 3 mentioned missiles, one of which is also the Barak ER. The ER, due to it’s huge power, has to be fired in a deployed/stationary status. All launchers can carry 8 missiles (aside from the MR/MRAD specific launcher, which can have 4 as an option).

All interceptors of the Barak MX system are compatible to be launched from the BARAK land-based launcher.

Anyway, for the specs for the missiles:

For its radar, it can use either a less powerful ELM-2138 radar, or a ELM-2084

Specifications:

Spoiler

Finding out what truck is carrying the system is hard, but I think it’s a TATA LPTA 2038. Sadly, I cannot find the weight of the system, so I will use the specifications of the truck.

(Some values are rounded up by me) The TATA LPTA 2038 has a ground clearance of 0.36m, a minimum turning circle diameter of approximately 22m, an overall height of 3.0 meters without the crane and 3.25m with the crane, an overall length of 8.8m excluding the towing hook and 9.1m including it, and an overall width of 2.5m. The frame front overhang measures 1.54m, or 1.4m up to the mounting face, while the rear overhang is 1.7m. The front track width is 2.1m and the rear track width is 1.9m. The wheelbase spans 4.6m, and the loading platform is 6.1m long.

It weights:
Empty: 12.5 tons
Gross: 22.5 tons
Max payload: 10 tons

The engine is a Cummins ISLE 370-30 BS-III, a 4-stroke, turbocharged, intercooler-equipped inline 6-cylinder diesel engine with electronic control unit (ECU)-based fuel injection. It produces a maximum power of 370hp at 2100rpm and delivers a peak torque of 1480Nm at 1400rpm.
