So, i think the hull armor on the SU-76M and other vehicles that use the same chassis might be wrong, and i think this was a oversight.
The SU-76M is based on the chassis of the T-70 light tank but for some reason the SU-76M has a hull front with much weaker armor, and i think this might have been a oversight. Now, regarding the hull front:
- The T-70 light tank has a upper plate with 35mm of armor at 60° and a 45mm lower plate, sides are 15mm.
- The SU-76M has a upper plate with 25mm of armor at 60° and a 30mm lower plate, sides are 15mm.
Now this is were it gets weird, the anti-air ZSU-37 is based on the same chassis as the SU-76M that is based on the T-70 light tank. But the ZSU-37 has the same frontal armor as the T-70 light tank.
- The ZSU-37 has a upper plate with 35mm of armor at 60° and a 45mm lower plate, sides are also 15mm.
The armor is identical, the SU-76M, ZSU-37 and T-70 light tank all have the same armor layout, at the same angle, the same side armor and even the driver’s hatch is at the same position on the SU-76M and the ZSU-37, so i thing there might have been a oversight here, because the SU-76M and ZSU-37 share the same platform, but for some reason the hull armor on the SU-76M has 10mm less armor for the upper plate and 15mm less armor for the lower plate, despite them being the same tank.
So i think this was a mistake, and the hull frotal armor on the SU-76M should be the same as the armor on the ZSU-37, because they share the same hull, that are both based on the T-70 light tank.
