and where qualtity fails. Having a PESA radar and 12x R-77-1s succeeds
actually,aim120 and r77 are the worst missile
no it is, derby/r-darter are the worst.
But the meta is no longer the same as when the post was created, aim120 is no longer dominant.
You arrived a little late in this post.
Derby and R-Darter exist.
Instead of focusing on the worst missiles in the game we should focus on the best ones:
- AIM-9B
- AIM-9C
- R-3S
- R-3R
- PL-2
the best a2a missile is the Walleye
I personally prefer the gbu-24 over it
The Derby has the second highest acceleration in the game, with a 40g overload, which is definitely stronger than that useless AIM-120 in War Thunder.

The Derby is definitely better at closer ranges, but the AIM-120 is great at pretty much every range. It is the best BVR missile (scoring hits from 40km+) and is still pretty good at 5km~. The Derby doesn’t hold energy nearly as well, making it only good WVR
Good at every range is a stretch for the AMRAAM, it’s okay at medium range, sub-par at close range and slightly ahead at long range.
The only problem with being okay at medium range and slightly ahead at long range is that it’s hilariously easy to trash the missile by notching it. Close-Medium range shots with pretty much anything else are at least impossible to out-turn/roll. AMRAAM (especially AIM-120C despite being the one that should be the best for close range) isn’t great at close range.
…all Fox 3s have the same seeker, so aren’t they all equally easy to notch? (Besides MICA-EM) Also the AMRAAM is good at medium range, just not the best. Its decent at close range but certainly not the best. Its still useable and grabs me kills within 5km~, just less forgiving on the launch angle.
It is unquestionably the worst.
Which is the only metric that matters in a close range launch, making it the worst.
The worst =/= bad
It is. Your only point of comparison comes between it and the AAM-4.
Let me know when you actually have a real comparison between it and a MICA or R-77.
The difference in firing envelope between the AIM-120 and the rest is dramatic, which matters when close in shots are the only reliable way to make hits. And because of it’s poor envelope, it forces you to push further from your notch to fire than your opponent.
