What is an ADS?
An acoustic detection system is a technology that uses microphones or sound sensors to detect, locate and identify noises within the ADS’s environment. By analyzing sound signatures such as gunshots, vehicle engines or machinery, it can determine the direction and sometimes the distance of the source. These systems are quickly becoming widely used on modern military vehicles for threat detection and defense. With the introduction of vehicles like the Ajax, EBRC Jaguar and M10 Booker, the time has come for the introduction of acoustic detection systems to War Thunder. Currently the aforementioned vehicles are missing their ADS’s despite being modeled in-game, as seen below. To keep this shorter rather than longer we will focus on the Ajax and its ADS.

Ajax and its Acusonic:
General Dynamics as well as the UK Ministry of Defense explicitly state that all Ajax variants are equipped with an ADS as a part of their defensive capabilities, specifically the Thale Acusonic acoustic detection system. It is one of several brand new situational awareness and defense systems included on the Ajax. “Designed to accurately sense and report the direction of incoming enemy fire, the system will give the vehicle’s crew the critical situational awareness to react to the threat. Each Ajax will be fitted with three Acusonic sensors, giving the crew a 360-degree threat-detection capability.” - UK MOD DE&S

In-game:
In terms of in-game implementation and viability the ADS should act similarly to a laser warning system. The ADS would be able to provide the crew, or in our case the player, a directional cue of an enemy vehicle provided by sound; weapons fire, helo blades, etc. The ADS would be able to provide the player with the bearing, range and altitude of a an enemy target. This would give the Ajax, Jaguar, Booker and any future platforms with an ADS system a uniqueness and advantage that these vehicles deserve. Why add cutting-edge vehicles if you’re not going to include the very systems that give them their edge?

Below is a smorgasbord of information and documentation regarding the Ajax’s Thales Acusonic acoustic detection system. This in should be a good starting point for the implementation of ADS’s in War Thunder. (screenshots included for those not wanting to go off-site or download PDFs)

yeah, +1 for sure, we’ve needed this for some time.

+1 would be nice to have

IIRC the M10 Booker also has it modeled in game

They can’t get HESH right and you think they could make this useful?

Thale Acusonic acoustic detection system is gunshots only and quite specifically -

Correct, I mentioned other environmental factors such as helos because different systems have different capabilities. Although I focused on the Acusonic for the sake of being succinct, this post is a push for several ADS types across several nations in-game

This already exists in the game

would be nice for my tank to have acoustic detection as well as its autistic detection (me)

To a large degree this is effectively replicated by Sound Guy’s directional stereo sounds that are already in the game.
IRL They have those ADSs because you can’t hear crap over the sound of engines, hearing protection, etc.
IWT You get supernatural hearing to not only tell where shots come from from both audio cues, but also the “hit indicator”. Plus you can (usually) detect and locate enemy vehicles by their engine and track noise.

Even if it isn’t too impactful in-practice, more modern systems should be modeled in-game to represent how vehicles have advanced technologically.
That being said, it’s kinda funny to imagine War Thunder with Fortnite-style visual sound effects.
