History:
HNLMS Karel Doorman is a multi functional support ship to assist with amphibious operations carried out by the Dutch navy. She is the only ship of her class, built to replace HNLMS Zuiderkruis and HNLMS Amsterdam after their decommissioning and sale to the Peruvian navy respectively.
She was laid down on the 7th of June 2011, in the Damen shipyard in Galați, Romania, launched on the 17th of October 2012 and commissioned on the 24th of April 2015. HNLMS Karel Doorman currently holds the title of the largest in service ship in the Dutch navy and the largest vessel built in Romania. She is the 4th vessel in the Dutch navy to carry the name.
Even before her commissioning, HNLMS Karel Doorman would deliver aid to ebola stricken countries such as Sierra Leone and Liberia, off loading here first batch of aid to the former on the 18th of November 2014.
While docked in Amsterdam on the third of February 2016, Germany and the Netherlands would sign an agreement to allow Germany to become a co-user of HNLMS Karel Doorman.
Late in 2017, HNLMS Karel Doorman would deliver aid to the Carribbean Sea after it was impacted by Hurricane Irma. She would later take part in the exercise Trident Juncture.
In 2024, HNLMS Karel Doorman would partake in Operation Aspides. After needing to fix an issue with the Goalkeeper CIWS in Crete, she would help in evacuating a heavily injured crewmember from MV Verbena after it was struck by two Houthi anti ship missiles.
In 2026, HNLMS Karel Doorman would undergo a planned 11 month refit to replace her CWIS with a 76mm Sovraponte gun and RIM-116s.
