HMS Abdiel needs to have its designation changed

[what should it be designated as?]
  • Minelayer
  • Destroyer
  • Moved to the coastal tree as a Minelayer

The problem with it being at 4.3 it gets mostly down tiers and at that br you dont get many maps where you can spawn it and IRL it was not a cruiser as it was large fast minelayer due to most minelayers being in the coastal tree it may fit better there as a rank 5 coastal boat, but if it can’t be moved over then it should be redesignated at a destroyer as it has nothing apart from the larger then normal size for a destroyer that makes it diffrent.

She was only initially designated a Cruiser
because she used Cruiser engines and transmission to give her the speed justifying their service class name of Fast Minelayers. Did they even carry a Cruiser moniker at any point post commissioning?

So yes she should be a Minelayer, but certainly not a coastal as the class were purpose built, long range ocean going ships.

Gameplay is almost exclusively as a Destroyer and she is armed almost exactly as the other British 4.3s. The Slightly thicker skinned hull is countered by her large size making you a bigger target. I wouldn’t call her a Destroyer though, but Imo she should get a Destroyer spawn.

So I vote Minelayer, but would settle for Destroyer.

FYI I get mostly uptiers and only rarely can I not spawn her. Instead it’s Cruiser spawn points when others are 5.0+ and you are out matched at these ranges.

Definetly shouldnt be moved to coastal, at a minimum, she has the same fire-power of most destroyers.

So long as spawn points arent affected, then she should remain put, light cruiser is fine, though if she can only spawn in cruiser spawns and not destroyer spawns, then she needs to be reclassed. (Not played her in a while)

Though wouldnt say no to a wider overhaul vehicle classificaitons, and that goes for more than just naval.

well i mainly put it in there as top tier coastal has been bluring the line with low tier bluewater with the frigates.

i have also only been able to find one boat directly designated as a mine layer with the vs-8 but i may have missed one as you have to look at every vehical

Mines are not really a mechanic that gaijin really embraced all that well I’ve found. Though is funny as hell when you cover a cap-zone with mines and keep getting kills long after youve been sunk and respawned in something else :D

On a related note…sister ships HMS Apollo & Ariadne (pic)

R (40)

Both had only 2x2 QF. Mk. XV’s (no B turret) but improved secondaries/aa. If Gaijin refused to budge and called these Cruisers it would be a real kick in the teeth.

There’s a lot of ship classification errors in this game with many around 4.0 surprisingly, but I cannot see this being switched TT’s as than comes the thought of horrible economics or it leading to Pandora’s box for what can & cannot be swapped, Besides it’s an Ocean going warship & shouldn’t be dumped in a tree called coastal like so many other bluewater ships currently are.

Also I doubt the devs would be generous enough to give an oversize reversed Hunt class a Rank V placement resulting in a lot of people getting a free Rank V & the first since the 2.01 TT split.

IMHO it should stay where it’s but be rerated to it’s historical Minelayer classification & given a destroyer spawn, the likelihood is high it would probably get a frigate DM then & Besides it isn’t like a Minelayer isn’t the strangest ship type in the bluewater TT when things like Armoured Cruisers & Sloops already exist

Yet like all classification errors, they likely will never change it.

Other examples:

Actual classification/ in game classification

Ayanami class Destroyer (Frigate)

Isles class Naval Trawler (subchaser)

Peacock class Corvette (Subchaser without ASW equipment)

Project 1331M corvette (Frigate, from my understanding MPK was a classification for ships smaller than frigates)

Project 204 corvette (subchaser)

K class Sloop (frigate & destroyer)

Scharnhorst class Battleship (Battlecruiser)

Vifor class destroyer (1917, it would be a cruiser at that point being rated as a scout cruiser in 1915 & similar the Tsukuba & Kurama class Armoured Cruisers are labelled as Battlecruisers due to their dates being between 1912 & 1922 when rated as such)

Alaska class Large Cruiser (Battlecruiser)

Project 69 Heavy Cruiser (Battlecruiser)

River class Frigate (gunboat, somehow the US derivative is labelled a frigate)

Albatros class Corvette (gunboat)

An so on.
