Fuel tanks… they have been known to just randomly eat shells especially with heat it can also randomly explode so I have no idea.
That’s more volumetric than fuel tanks. It’s how some tanks can have over 1000 millimeters of effective armor in some areas. I’ve even seen it go up to 8000 in some cases.

look at the side of the is 7 it literally can reach 1000mm of armor for some reason.
Looks like i managed to replicate the area of impact and reached the conclusion that it’s purely a volumetrics related issue.
Unfortunate, blame Gaijin for their modelling that tends to work as a buff or nerf depending on the situation.

volumetric sucks, but hull break wasn’t great either. can’t have a good mechanic for once
