ok really thanks hoping that this time we will manage to convince them that hesh is rubbish.
It wasn’t really a good round - there’s a lot of mythology about it.
IIRC it’s real world capability was to penetrate about 1.3 times the shell diameter - virtually every gun that fired it could do better with standard AP, the 180 and 165 being exceptions due to not firing AP of course.
And it is completely defeated by any substantial spaced or composite armour.
the various photos of tanks being demolished by it in trials show that it large calibre HESH could significant explosive damage to externals and vehicle structure, and (again IIRC) the trials of 76mm vs an armoured car showed that it could smash through thin armour just by kinetic energy.
All of which is completely standard for large rounds of any type and not exceptional at all.
in WT it should be just that useful and no more - certainly nothing about it should justify any sort of BR increase - it was a useful round, but not magic!
In game it currently detonates on side skirts.
It doesn’t penetrate but creates a shockwave that breaks and deforms the steel leaving sever structural damage even with something as small as the 76mm
They shot a T-34 with the 76mm IIRC it knocked it out frontally with a single hit.
well I’ll let you try the 165mm or 183mm hesh in the game. I think you’ll stop playing this shell very quickly because it’s ROTTEN. Then yes it may not be a miracle shell but in real life we all know that the 183mm was capable of blowing up everything and that in the game we struggle on tiger 1 and panther.
in short in any case the simple fact that the shell and 22kg of explosive should theoretically make any tank explode in the turret or in the track which happens rarely in the game. Knowing that in real life the fv had more explosive than 22kg but hey Gajin I don’t know what they did on this one.
in the case of bazooka plates it ought to push them together before its delay action fuse triggers
Hard disagree and Ive read RARDE reports on hesh. If it behaved as it ought and was consistent I can see the cent AVRE going to 7.3 and the FV4005 joining it there
I have played them and have the 4005 spaded - but that was several years ago and I haven’t used it since due to the terrible issues with it.
I last used the Centurion AVRE a few months ago.
I’m not saying it is fine now - I’m saying there is a reasonable amount of info around in practical tests to get it set to a reasonable level of lethality - but that will likely be less than people think for the smaller shells such as 105mm
You mean this one? TRIALS TO ASSESS THE LETHALITY OF A 76 MM HESH SHELL AGAINST ARMOURED PERSONNEL CARRIERS - Defense Technical Information Center
The basic conclusions that can be reached from that for WT are, IMO,:
1/ light armour can be too thin to let HESH operate properly and should just be hull broken.
2/ solid structural members like wheels or engines should allow HESH to work; (although note that track edge hits do nothing!!)and
3/ when it explodes HESH has the same explosive force as “regular” HE (well duh!)
I don’t see how that could possibly justify a full 1.0 increase for he 4005 - it’s long reload, poor armour and exposed ammo inside are massive limitations on its effectiveness as a weapon system.
And there would need to be some data to support the AVRE going up too - again the long reload is the issue. Sure it has better armour, but it’s still not great at 7.0’s context
HESHs main issue is that it either doesn’t “penetrate” armour it absolutely should, its a dice roll every time or it does but then wont trigger overpressure in situations where it should.

its reload really isn’t too bad and I don’t find the weak turret too bad, angle and you block 50 cal and from range bounce 20mm+ My main issue with the shell is its poor consistency. I can shoot a driver hatch that’s 50mm thick and get a non pen when really it should be blown in and the whole crew pulped.
And there would need to be some data to support the AVRE going up too
165mm HESH vs soft turret tiger 2, blew a hole through it very easily. In-game it isn’t a kill shot when it really ought to have been
Spoiler
HESH is also missing the “scabbing” that its famous for and just has a small spall scatter which doesn’t reflect the amount of shrapnel it would realistically generate.
Add its scabbing and make it consistent and 165mm and 183mm will blow every conventional armour tank in game to pieces in a single semi decent shot
I do love it when my 183mm hesh does literally nothing to the panthers upper front plate.
I love it when my 183mm hesh only tracks a BMP
just one thing, the hesh sucks and is not realistic that’s all. The damage is not even coherent end of the nonsense. Just sucks I beg anyone to tell me otherwise or even to say what is the mean it just sucks period.
JUST THE HESH IT’S SO BAD IN THE GAME. Today this shell is a bullshit
HEAt got a buff after some time, but now they’ve touched something and it’s nerfed again.
What did you expect, HESH has been inconsistent fro more than two years now. If you want HESH to actually do something just aim for the lower front plate or lower side plate. And that doesn’t guarantee that it’s going to work anyways.
The only buff I found to the HESH is that the 165mm and 182mm HESH usually destroy tanks if you hit their wheels, even the Maus.
I find it funny that gaijin adds this absurd mechanic of killing by hitting the wheels, but leaving the damage ridiculous or null for all HESH when you hit areas where you should destroy the enemy.
Thats what i’m saying, HESH should kill almost in every part because of it’s composition. But you can only kill by hitting lower plates. Like HE.
No, really, that’s what I’ve been explaining since the beginning, but well seen.
Lol, my bad.
