Designation: V12 was one of the early He 177A‑1 prototypes, part of the first batch of developmental aircraft.
Purpose: It was used for testing heavy armament configurations, particularly the installation of 30 mm MK 101 cannon in the nose.
Conversion Program: Known as the R1 conversion, this program aimed to rearm twelve He 177A‑1 bombers with fixed forward‑firing cannon to act as long‑range “destroyers” against enemy shipping and bomber formations.

Armament specification :

  • Armament: Two 30 mm MK 101 cannon mounted in the nose.
  • Performance Impact: Flight trials revealed significant drawbacks:
  • Loss of 100 km/h in speed.
  • Reduction in bomb load to 1,000 kg.
  • Nose (upper) : 1 × MG 81 (7.92 mm light machine gun)
  • Nose (lower) : 2 × MK 101 (30 mm cannon, semi‑fixed forward firing)
  • Dorsal (forward) : 1 × MG 131 (13 mm heavy machine gun in FDL B 131/1A mount)
  • Ventral : 1 × MG 131 (13 mm heavy machine gun)
  • Tail : 1 × MG 131A1 (13 mm heavy machine gun in tail position)

There was also a claims that 5 He 177 A3/R-5 have 75mm gun but i can’t find any irl images maybe it’s fake.

Could it just be a mod to the existing plane or did the flight structure need to be changed to accommodate the cannons?

the He 177 A‑1/V12 required ( structural changes to the nose section ) and weight distribution to mount the MK 101 cannons.
Basically another He 177 with different makeup 💄

Also the He 177 we have in game have different nose section

yes it was 100km slower and loud out limited for 1000kgs of bombs if i recall !

There was also a version with BK 5, but i just dont think its all that usefull, its still a big bomber in terms of handling.
