Background

Spoiler

The Grumman S-2E or S2F-3S was a further development of the S-2D / S2F-3, effectively it was an S-2D with Jezebel and Julie equipment. The type was introduced in 1961 and served throughout the years including the Vietnam War and finally retired in 1976 being replaced by the S-3.

in 1976 the Taiwanese government ordered 16 Grumman S-2E aircraft to replace the aging fleet of the earlier S-2A’s which had been serving since 1967. The S-2E’s would not be delivered until 1978 and soon thereafter they placed another order for a total of 34 S-2E’s, which would be delivered before 1980.

The S-2E took over the role of the earlier S-2A, which was to patrol the Taiwanese straight. On June 22nd of 1981, S-2E No. 2130 would be destroyed in an accident although no casualties were reported. However, on November 17th of the same year, S-2E No. 2142 would meet a dimmer fate, crashing in pingtung country resulting in the death of the 2 crew onboard.

The S-2E was supplemented by the delivery of sevem S-2G’s, and in the late 1980s’s an example of the S-2E and S-2G would be sent to Grumman in the United States to undergo testing and trials of a modernization program now known as the S-2T. Following the success, almost all of the S-2E’s would be converted to S-2T standard except for 3 that would go on to be museum pieces.
