I am getting close to getting the gripen so I am trying to learn about the plane. A big majority of the people I talk to say that the gripen is underperforming flightmodel wise. Also it having the wrong radar and many more issues. How true are these ? Or is it just copium
FM is probably underperforming a bit, but mostly game limitations at this point.
The Radar the Gripen has IRL is a modified/upgraded Blue Vixen radar found in the Sea Harrier FA2, but between info for that upgrade being tricky to come by and Gaijin has yet to implement what changes they know at the moment, its still a 1 for 1 C&P of the Blue Vixen. Which is a fairly solid radar for 13.7 but outclassed by 14.0s AESA radars.
Its also missing a number of features like MAWS and even a centre line A2G weapon mount.
It is also affected by the BOL nerfs at the moment
It is also quite limited in AAM count with 6 being below average.
That having all been said. Its not too bad at the moment, but definetly needs some TLC

Excuse my lack of knowlage but what does tlc mean ? Also if the gripen had maws irl why is it missing ingame ? Most planes have maws so its not a balance issue right ? I don’t really mind the a2g limitation since I just don’t play top tier ground but I feel like they should buff the FM a little. Now I don’t have the gripen so take it with a grain of salt but I don’t think a 12 ton plane would loose a dogfight to a heavy fighter. Even if its the rafale. I know how diabolical the release gripen was so I am not expecting something like that. But considering the plane is very different in playstyle than the rest of the planes. And has a limited loadout I feel like it should at least be able to dominate the other planes consistently in a dogfight.

Yeah, but it would mean you could always drop a bomb on something without loosing any A2A and if you did run pure bombs (handy for stock grind) it means you can actually kill a base

should it be able to ? I don’t know how rafale is irl but I know its very heavy compared to the gripen. And no matter the twr heavy planes tend to struggle at low speeds
Gripen C doesnt have a positive TWR like the Typhoon and Rafale do. The Gripen E that does probably will do well against them
Also the rafale just has OP weapons at the moment
Yeah mica is straight up the best fox3. Now it can launch while notching and do a 180 to kill him if he also tries to evade it. Is there anything other nations could get the would combat the mica while also not completely destroying the game

I feel like just giving it better fm+maws pod+real radar would benefit it a lot.
I think FM is a lost cause.
But MAWS, radar upgrades, it could even get VWS (voice warning system) like in the F-16 and Typhoon (more fun than anything) and a total BOL overhaul (BOL is 1/4 the strength it should be) and it would be fairly good. Also maybe worth considering it for Aim-120C5s given its limited payload.
But ultimately the Swedes will need to wait for the Gripen E for something properly decent at top tier
yeah I doubt they will buff the fm. There is 0 reason for the maws to not exist tho. I don’t think they would get aim120c5 since sweden just didn’t use em afaik. maws is also not really that important if you have a mouse and a keyboard with the c key intact. A good fm buff and its real radar is all it needs tbh. Bol id say would be a nice buff but I really don’t have any experience with them so I don’t know. it looks like the sheer quantity makes up for the weak it signature
The problem isnt necessarily quite as noticable on the Gripen, but the issue is, the nerf is on ALL BOL carriers and a few like the Tornados, Shar and Viggens are suffering quite a bit at the moment with it so weak.
Also, spamming dozens of the damn things sometimes just does nothing, where 1 to 2 regular CMs let alone LCMs defeats whatever is fired at you.
All BOL carriers are just a bit… Rough.
Its useful in the middle of a furball and you cant look everywhere and also its very useful in ASB where you are in teh cockpit
we can only hope (copium overload) that in the next update we get a non gimped gripen e and they also fix the older gripens

Iris will open the door for the next gen ir missiles arms race. Everyone will want theirs and eventually we will get mica ir and it will be over for the gamemode
A2A IIR missiles (for now) will not come before the 5th gen planes… so in December we may see Grippen E, F/A-18E and other 4++ gen’s, but no new missiles.
We need new game mode (maps) for top tier with such weapons.
Yeah, if we keep the small maps, there would be 0 reason to not take long range ir over fox3s since you don’t use the full range of the fox3 anyway. I feel like at this point is where the game will really start to get unbalanced since modern day military spending is just too different. Most countries don’t have a mica equivalent. Most don’t have aim9x either. The tech gap is so big and rafale has been dominating so much that gaijin decided to add 5th gen just to make top tier even for everyone (f35 spam)
