Grass in ground battles

This is just a poll to see how many of you play with grass turned on or off.

I recently re-enabled grass in sniper view because I couldn’t stand the ugly, outdated ground textures anymore. Yes, it creates an extra obstacle, but at least the game looks a bit nicer now. I just wish the render distance were larger.

What is your setting?

  • I play with grass ON
  • I play with grass OFF

It’s the only setting I have off to combat the waves of ULQ players I have to fight against as a console-focused player. I wish ULQ didn’t exist, and I also wish such features like grass, shadows, etc would be force-toggled on for Realistic and Sim, leaving such crutches available solely for Arcade.

Unfortunately, Gaijin keeps the bone on the plate for the potato PC masses so it is what it is for now. We all just have to deal with it.

Grass just adds lag and is such an issue for hiding tanks that i play with it off.

that and minimum particle effects are the only ULQ settings i run (my gpu struggles but just about keeps a satisfactory framerate like this so wont go lower)

Play with it on in 3rd person view, off in sniper view. Best compromise between looks and visibilty.

Only other setting I have off is the dust/haze thing that sometimes comes on maps like Sinai etc, for the same visibility reason. I cant remember what the setting is called though.

@GNDM_Panzer I dont think the whole ULQ setting exists in the form that made it overpowered to use anymore to be honest. Its been quite a long time since Ive heard anyone complain about it or really notice me being killed in a way that would suggest it was being used.

I play with grass off because wild grass is not that long.

I play with all my graphics pumped up high (have 5800X3D + 9070XT @ 1440p, so my FPS is very high), but I do turn off grass in sight. I would rather they enabled it for everyone, but as long as people can disable it, it’s the one setting that I feel would put me at too much of a disadvantage to enable.

I’m not entirely convinced as I still die on occasion to being cross-mapped through concealment at an angle that Mk1 eyesballs really wouldn’t see. It could be ULQ or it could be someone is genuinely cheating. Tough to tell, honestly.

I just think grass, as well as speed of sound, should just not be togglable at all.

If someone wants to play in low settings or ULQ, then let them have really low resolution grass; but grass, regardless.

Much like playing with sniper sight from gunner view or whatever its called. Id love to have it enabled, but so few others do that to do so is a major handicap. One reason I quite like GSB as it forces that mode for everyone

ULQ feels like such an exploit. Yeah, shouldnt remove assets just make them look terrible

I’m sure at least 70% of the people who claim that they need to remove grass “so they can run War Thunder” would “unexpectedly” turn out to be able to perfectly run grass even on Movie settings.

Yep.

Despite all its issues. War Thunder is actually a very well optimised game that runs really well. Even on Potatos they probably dont need ULQ for a playable FPS

Yep! Specially now, with upscaling and frame generation.

You’d have to be running the game on a pregnancy test not to be able to run it with grass.

I think it should be forced to have on
We want realistic gameplay no?
But until then i gonna keep it on off cuz its a big disadvantge

Depends
Some maps are smooth and some are nightmare
especially some of the reworked ones

But they probably would still run fine at a low settings and not necessarily require the full ULQ

No they arent
Advance to the rhine and attica are fps drops hell
And im on low graphics its just something is bugged in thos maps

Also wish you couldn’t adjust your own engine sound separately.

Tuning engine sound for everyone equally? Sure. I keep stuff quiet myself as I dont like loud noises, but making it a de facto requirement to reduce realism in realisitc or even worse: simulator battles to gain advantage over others is just plain absurd.

As for graphics and potatoes:

Warthunder 9 years ago looked amazing and had more detail (plane damage models/decals, especially canopy hits) than it does now so…

Yeah agreed.

Not to mention that engine sounds are still bugged. Somehow a Jagpz 4-5 was able to slip right behind my Pershing last night and I didn’t even hear him when I should’ve been able to despite my own engine.
