History of Caproni:
Giovanni Battista Caproni, known as Gianni Caproni, was an influential Italian aviation pioneer and entrepreneur born on July 3, 1886, in Massone, Arco. Educated in engineering in Munich, Liège, and Paris, Caproni laid the foundation for his innovative career in aeronautics by establishing an aircraft manufacturing company in Taliedo, near Milan, in 1908.
Caproni’s company achieved prominence during World War I, producing groundbreaking aircraft like the Caproni Ca.3, a heavy bomber that became a cornerstone of Italy’s aerial strategy. His factory grew to encompass advanced production techniques, employing thousands of workers and crafting airplanes renowned for their performance and reliability.
After World War I, the company diversified into civilian aviation, producing aircraft for transport and exploration, such as the Caproni Ca.60, an ambitious prototype for a transatlantic flying boat. However, the Great Depression and limited market demand led to financial difficulties. Despite these challenges, Caproni remained active in military aviation during World War II, manufacturing bombers and reconnaissance planes.
In the immediate post-war period, also following the killing of the workshop director Arnaldo Vischi by partisan elements on 31 August 1945 and the arrest warrant issued against him on charges of collaboration with the Germans and of having favoured the fascist regime, Caproni went into hiding until 1946, the year in which he was acquitted during the preliminary investigation for not having committed the crime.
After his acquittal, Caproni attempted to reorganize his industrial group, which in the meantime had accumulated numerous debts. Between 1947 and 1951 he sought financiers and clients all over the world: the Soviet Union, France, and Israel. He also tried to obtain financing from Vatican banks and during a trip to the United States he also met President Harry Truman. During this meeting he was introduced into the presidential cabinet where he was amazed to notice that two large photographs were hanging on the walls, one depicting him and one of Wright. To an astonished Caproni, the American president said:
“I found them here, President Roosevelt left them for the entire duration of the war, and I did not remove them. You two are the creators of world aviation and America honors you.”
The new Italian government preferred to obtain supplies from abroad, especially from the United States , and this caused the crisis at Caproni, which lost many orders and the number of workers was increased for political reasons and Caproni himself was forced to accept concessions to the workers under threat of arms.
The oppressive economic crisis and the serious damage suffered by the bombings led to the closure of the factory. To survive, the company briefly pivoted to producing motorcycles under the Capriolo brand and agricultural machinery, but nothing could save it. In 1951, in fact, the activity ceased and in 1955 the industry went into liquidation.
Gianni Caproni passed away on October 27, 1957, in Rome. His legacy is preserved at the Museo dell’Aeronautica Gianni Caproni in Trento, which houses many of his innovative aircraft and documents his pivotal contributions to aviation history.
Caproni’s contributions to aviation were recognized globally, and he is often featured as an inspirational figure in discussions of early 20th-century aeronautics. Notably, he inspired a character in Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film The Wind Rises.
Why this suggestion?
Well I simply believe that such an important figure in both italian history and aviation history in general absolutely deserves a spot in game, and i would love to equip this profile picture.
On a side note this suggestion might serve as another reminder that the italian community is still waiting on Caproni’s aircrafts to appear in-game, since even tho he was the first one to produce an aircraft in the whole country he is still not rapresented in game at all… the most inspiring figure in the italian aviation industry, a pioneer of flight, completly forgotten (at least in WT).
That’s all, please upvote and yeah… good life i dunno.
