Irl DM73 has 8% to 10% increase in kinetic energy compared to DM63. Thats what you can read everywhere. More propellant, newly designed dbsc pellets with longer burn, higher chamber pressure. DM63 can penetrate roughly 680 mm to 720 mm of RHA at a distance of 2 kilometers. L55A1 DM73 punches through an estimated 750 mm to 800 mm of RHAe at the same 2-kilometer distance. DM73 is a clear improvement over DM63. Otherwise it wouldn exist. No one adopts a new shell which might just have 10mm more pen. With less anti Germany world view this should be obvious.
DM83 was supposed to get adopted this year, but Rheinmetall got a load of captured equipment from a certain country. The whole project was delayed. Ppl suppose the new penetrator getting optimized to bypass recent ru armor layouts. Live fire tests on captured hardware, new computer models etc etc.
Don’t forget new ammo types use Rheinmetall’s safe propellant, which would greatly benefit survivability of Leopard tanks.
So my pick would:
New ammo.
DM53 has been phased our for decades now. All L55 Leopards should get DM63 to profit from these double base surface coated safe propellants.
DM73 high pressure ammo for the Leopard 2A7V. This would make the new L55A1 gun finally a usefull upgade. Sources differ…its said between 8 - 10% better performance. Certainly better than just 10mm more pen.
Same reload as the Abrams family. Its the same gun…
Iris-T should get buffed. The missile underperforms and the seeker should be inert to DIRCM. Thats one of the main issues. DIRCM helis butcher German teams and there’s no way to shot back.
It would essentially be a Leopard 2A6 with Trophy for War Thunder purposes, and the Leopard 2A6 is a 12.3 tank that’s still sitting at 12.7 for unknown reasons.
10% increase in energy =/= 10% increase in penetration.
The only thing different about DM73 compared to DM53 for War Thunder’s purposes is it’s 30 m/s gain in velocity.
