General Japanese & Thai Ground Forces Discussion HQ

Translating the above comment.
The Type 74 urban warfare specification was confirmed by the 1st Tank Battalion and was unveiled at the event.
There are rumors in Japan that it is equipped with explosive reactive armor and that it was removed immediately after the event, but the Type 74 is not equipped with explosive reactive armor.

Since the Type 74 has been decommissioned we will surely see documentation being declassified, right….?

Well we dont know.
Maybe.

But i have feeling that Type 74 will still be used to defend from godzilla.

That 45 degree elevation stated for Chi-Nu and Ho-Ni III in that one document just didn’t make sense. Another far more detailed document lists 15 degrees for them. In game they have 20 degrees and you can see slight clipping. It’s very obvious when you elevate Ho-Ni III’s gun high up and turn it to the side. At about 15 degrees they don’t clip, but I can’t figure out how to measure the precise angle. Anyone have ideas how to do it?

Here is another thing I was trying to figure out. Recently they changed Chi-Ha’s gearbox from 4+1 to 8+2, because it has high low range just like the later tanks. What surprised me is the greatly increased reverse speed to 19km/h, while the later tanks stick at 8km/h. Even with 1st reverse gear Chi-Ha goes 11km/h. It can’t be weight and horsepower, since Ho-Ni III is faster than Ho-I. Chi-Ha’s gear ratios are just that good. Unfortunately those don’t appear in any documents.

just let it go man >:( i want this reverse speed

We don’t know which one is closer to historical. It would be great if Chi-Tos and others could reverse something like 15km/h.

Chi-Ha base and Ha-Go (it also got -5 → -10km/h upgrade of reverse speed) gear ratios were taken from US translation of Japanese document about tanks.

Ha-Go

And I’ve seen exactly the same (even with this weird 1 1.75 numbers on 4th gear ) Ha-Go gear ratio numbers in one Jacar document (but it was just one page document so I lost it), that’s why I am sure it is correct.
Thanks to this gear ratios numbers both tanks got good reverse speed.

Since Chi-He base is heavier and uses another engine it is not known was gear ratios changed and I suppose it was changed. Because of that it still has old gear ratio with just -8km/h

The problem with other tanks is that gear ratio information is missing. Gaijin do changes in transmission only when this numbers is known. So it is good if somebody will find information of gear ratios for Chi-He, Chi-To or Chi-Ri or any other tank in game.

As documents shows it is historical performances. I am not sure will Chi-To has more reverse speed because it is another, more heavier tank with another transmission but anyway it would be nice to see actual numbers for it’s gear ratio.

Those are some great finds! I had already abandoned all hope of finding gear ratios for any Japanese WWII tanks. They are something I expected to see in more basic allied documents. In Soviet and American tank documents they are quite common. Perhaps Japanese tank driver field manuals didn’t have them listed or something. Many old tractors and trucks have gear ratios listed in transmission shift pattern chart in the cabin and of course clearly in manuals.

All I have about Chi-Ha’s gearbox is this.

Spoiler

For the later tanks my hopes are very low. Perhaps somewhere might be a mention if Chi-He, Ho-I and Chi-Nu still had the same gearbox as Chi-Ha. The first two were kind of on the borderline with weight, specially with the variation in documents. I think I’ve seen Chi-Ha Kai listed with 15 and 15.5 ton weight and then there is Ho-Ni III.

If the gearbox was the same, but with ratios adjusted for changed weight and power, then the change would be practically the same for each hear. For example Shermans had three or more adjusted variations of the same gearbox.

It is a curse. The memory will haunt you, but you will never find it.

I wonder where they’re sourcing the ammo from. Must be new production.

In the game, the Ka-Chi can reverse at 17 km/h, but according to Mitsubishi’s data, the reverse speed is about 10 km/h. The Ka-Chi is designed based on the Chi-He. However, the reverse speed of the Chi-He in the game is 8 km/h.

Here is the gear ratio information for Type 3 Ka-Chi.

I see. Ka-Chi gear ratios is really wrong and should be changed. I reported it

The problem with Chi-He is that it’s gear ratio looks very simple and artificially created by man.

Gear ratio

R2: -5.35,
R1: -8.35,
N: 0.0,
1: 12.5,
2: 10.5,
3: 8.5,
4: 6.0,
5: 3.5,
6: 2.5,
7: 1.5,
8: 1.0

Ka-Chi made on Chi-He base but it is hard to say use it the exactly same transmission then Ka-Chi.
It would be much better if gear ratio for Chi-He or Ho-I or Chi-Nu will be found to changing gear ratio for all this vehicles because they are Chi-He base

They go quite well with Chi-Ha’s, except the 5th gear. All ratios are a bit higher and the high ratios used for 1 and R1 are significantly higher. Obviously all the other high ratios aren’t used because they are so close to those low ratios. By the way aren’t some in game transmissions modelled similarly, so they skip gears which have too similar ratio?

Spoiler

Chi-Ha to Ka-Chi gear ratio comparison

In those Chi-Ha’s ratios the lower 4th speed of 0.95 doesn’t make sense to me. High and low difference is far greater on other speeds and 3rd speed low ratio of 0.96 is too close. Instead of 0.95, it should probably be bit lower what Ka-Chi has, so about 0.6. Can it be anything else than a mistake and how is it modelled in game?
