I wonder if they’re planning any upgrades to it? Maybe AHEAD?
l don’t think there will be a successor or modification to the type87self-propelled anti-aircraft gun.
I also curious about that, maybe giving it a new missile and AHEAD

The Type 87 SPAA will probably be kept as long as possible, but without upgrades.
IIrc upgrades such as the addition of MANPADs were cost prohibitive on top of the already expensive price of the vehicles.
The Type 74s have been retired with only few in storage. Those using the Type 74 platform - the Type 78 ARVs are still active, but these and the Type 87 SPAAs are going to run out of parts sooner or later. Not to mention the ARVs based on the Type 90 and Type 10 have come online to replace/supplement the older type.
Japan has been spending a lot of their budget for the military, so it could be remotely possible, but still unlikely.
There has been another vehicle in development to counter drones. Research (expected to be done by 2031) is underway to counter drone swarms using a 155mm gun on supposedly a Type 89 platform. New SAMs are being developed as well.
Gun-based systems similar to the Type 87 such as the CTA project have sadly fallen by the wayside.

Considering the proportionally recent call across the globe for anti drone platforms utilizing 30-40mm cannons it seems unlikely that there won’t be some sort of successor to the Type 87, to protect forces against hostile drones if nothing else.
I would’ve assumed that the CTA program would have been brought back to life to meet this requirement, but perhaps experience from it will still be useful in the future.
Evidently, the 30mm RCWS upgrade planned for the Type 10 and the various direct energy weapons developed in Japan point to an increased awareness about the ever so persistent FPV drones that have been deployed in Ukraine, so I’d say that the JGSDF wouldn’t be so fast to ditch their SPAAG without a suitable replacement.
This project haven’t cancel yet? Didn’t have it news after I think 2013 or 14
lt seems that CTA will not be equipped. From what l remember,CTA was created so that when developing such a vehicle in the future, development would be completed quickly.
That’s the first I’ve heard of a 155 mm gun being used to counter drone swarms, at least for Japan. The US is developing something like that right now. As for Japan, I know of a 105 mm gun mounted on the LCV chassis to counter drone swarms, but not a tracked 155 mm system.
Here, the chassis is tracked, but I believe it’s conceptual, and I don’t see anything indicating it’s the Type 89.
Also, with the Type 74 now being retired, the chassis of the Type 87 SPAAG will have to be replaced. I’m pretty sure it is the new Type 89 chassis, but I could be mistaken
This is intended and will not be fixed.
Developer’s comment:
It is not considered a mistake. Since the game does not restrict movement at the lowest suspension position, such a position could cause shaking and vibrations in the tank’s chassis. Therefore, the angles were limited. The current angles satisfy us. A similar issue is currently observed with the Type 10, and a fix is also planned for it.
The Type 10 and TKX were the only tanks with accurate dynamic suspension angles, but this has since been adjusted to align with the Type 90 and Type 74, resulting in the front wheels no longer touching the ground.

Only third party websites mentioned a Type 89-based chassis being used. I took a quick look at the papers officially released, but found no mention of such.
I also believe that when there are no more spare parts, they will have to adapt the Type 87 SPAA’s turret on another vehicle. I’m unsure as to whether that new tracked vehicle has enough space for the turret without significant modification, though it and maybe an MCV hull could work.
Yes, the CTA project was cancelled.
I just mentioned it because we haven’t seen any similar gun-based systems (small-caliber, fast-firing, AA) being developed in recent memory.
I wonder if there are 30mm proxy-fuzes that are compatible with existing Japanese 30mm systems?
Yes, IIRC there are available proximity shells for both the 30mm Bushmaster of the CTWV and the future RCWS planned for the Type 10. Not sure if the JSDF ever purchased stocks of proxy ammo but I seem to remember an official document mentioning the various rounds in service for the ICV/RCV.
Enough of it was made to be added ingame tho hehehe
Admittedly, I feel like a few of these would be really iffy even at 1.0, so a future rank 0 might be needed for fair implementation.
As it seems, there really is a Ha-Go wreck on mainland Japan, or at least there was as of 2013, whether it is still there or not is anyone’s guess.
Spoiler
The precise location is still unknown
It does make sense, as back in 2005, a Chi-Ha was found on a beach in Miura Peninsula, Kanagawa prefecture. It was later moved to the Nasu War Museum, where it remains in its unrestored state.
Spoiler
But wait! Whilst doing research I stumbled upon yet another supposed mainland tank, that being another Chi-Ha. This one is located at the Kenzaki Turret Battery at the southern point of the Miura Peninsula, as a part of the Tokyo Bay defenses. I did not look too hard into the location of this one, so if we could find it I would be most happy.
Spoiler
While the author of the blog that posted these photos claims that this was the tank transported to the Nasu museum, this can be disproved by another blogger who visited in 2015.
Personally, I find the concept of a remaining few war machines still rusting away in modern Japanese territory to be quite intriguing, similar to the concept of postwar holdouts on Pacific islands.
