The game is broken in more ways than you could even imagine.
But we keep getting told that no Russian bias exists. In all seriousness, this is a classic example of the complete hash Gaijin has made of volumetric damage, but while this specific issue (T34 driver hatch) has been flagged hundreds of times over a number of years, Gaijin continues to ignore constant calls from the community to fix it. I’ve hit these things with SU152, Dicker Max, Sturer Emil, etc and had the same result as you, despite the armor supposedly being only about 45mm thick.
It’s precisely why I refuse to spend another cent on the game until Gaijin’s attitude changes SUBSTANTIALLY. Financially is the only way to get their attention. But it’ll take the whole community to do it.
