Functionally Frigates and destroyers in game are near identical in terms of durability and firepower at the same battle rating.
However Frigates are put at a huge disadvantage as they are considered valid targets for auto firing secondary guns while destroyers are not.
Individually while 20 to 40mm guns might not deal very much damage they can disable deck guns.
This puts any frigate fighting against destroyers at a huge disadvantage as the destroyer will be able to cripple its guns without even trying due to its secondary weapons auto firing all the while maintaining full damage and aiming control from its own main guns.
This needs to be corrected. Either add destroyers as viable targets for smaller secondary guns or remove frigates as viable targets. Personally I would see destroyers added as viable targets.
Since frigates are generally far down in the coastal tree they are harder to unlock and less played. So you might only have 1 or 2 of them on a team. So its not just a case of 1 destroyer vs 1 frigate. its 5 or 6 destroyers at once will all automatically focus fire their secondary guns against the frigate as its the only viable target in range.
That gonna depend which frigate your on… Like the russian frigate it mortar are crazy 10% crew wipe out per mortar land on you. and those crazy charges and big autocannons. Welp ofcourse they get wipe out easily. that why you normally play frigate stealthy.
The balancing of the RBU rocket mortar is a separate issue.
The auto firing secondary guns targeting them is a issue which effects every frigate in game
Without the rocket mortar I find it medicore at best.
Those 76mm auto cannons get 1 initial burst for high damage and then you deplete the auto loader.
It takes about 7 minutes for the crew to refill the auto loader and if you try to shoot and interrupt the reload early your looking at 1 volley of 76mm guns per about 10 seconds which is just very low damage
Also AK-230 and US 1.1" guns autofire at destroyers
These problems have the extra effect of disabling anti-air firing when your targeting a ship to shoot the main guns unless you toggle target classes, therefore opening yourself up to boats, so my feeling is that no AA group weapons should ever fire at ships automatically.
There’s also Albatross and Alcione which are corvettes but should perhaps be frigates, and Marne is a destroyer but should perhaps be a corvette
So is it 4 closely related bugs?
1 - Frigates are targeted by AAA weapons (old ‘feature’ that now seems like a bug?)
2 - AK-230 and US 1.1" target destroyers (definitely a bug)
3 - Al(batross|cione) are incorrectly classified as corvettes (only matters based on 1 and 2?)
4 - Marne is incorrectly classified as a destroyer (same as 3)
