Friendly Off Topic Discussion

Hey guys, just wanted to share a few thoughts on the current state of War Thunder.

No hate to the devs or anyone else, I just want to have a friendly discussion about where the game is heading because, honestly, I feel like it’s starting to slide downhill.

We have to face reality here: the game is 13 years old. Now that we have top-tier stuff like the F-18, Gripen, and Eurofighter, we’ve pretty much hit the ceiling. This is late end-game territory. Same goes for tanks—what’s next, futuristic concept vehicles? I doubt it, that’s not what War Thunder is about.

In my opinion, the game desperately needs a shake-up, starting with how major updates are handled. Right now, people only hype up updates for the new vehicles. Players spike for a month, and then the numbers drop again. I think Gaijin should split updates into three distinct categories, similar to what other successful games do:

  • Quality Updates: Strictly bug fixes and optimization. These should drop ASAP whenever they’re needed.
  • Feature Updates: New game modes, maps, and mechanics. Maybe once a quarter.
  • Vehicle Updates: Just the machinery.

Honestly, I’d rather get smaller vehicle drops 12 times a year—like 5 to 10 vehicles every single month. It would keep the player base consistently engaged and make the game’s development feel steady and predictable.

Let’s talk about events…

Devs, I love you, but what is the logic here lately? Look at the floatplane Spitfire event. If you missed just one mark, it cost about 6 bucks to buy it out. Meanwhile, you could buy the entire completed vehicle on the Market for like 12 bucks. Same thing happened with the KV—tons of grinding, but it barely scratches 15 euros on the market.

Why should players log in and sweat through a brutal grind every single day when the reward has zero market value? I get that you want to pump up concurrent player numbers, but that doesn’t work if the event vehicle isn’t worth at least 40+ euros. Look at past events like the Object (which is now worth over 200 euros) or the Vilkas. Those felt rewarding and made sense. Lately, the vehicles from the last three updates have been pretty mediocre, just added for the sake of adding something.

The bigger issue: 3000+ vehicles, but the same old objectives

We have over 3,000 vehicles in the game now, so why are the match objectives exactly the same as they were years ago? New vehicles bring people back for a bit, but they won’t stay if the core gameplay loop doesn’t evolve.

To keep players hooked, you need to hit the classic gaming triangle: Teamwork, Reward, and Fun. If a game successfully pulls off at least two of those, people will play and the player count will grow naturally. Right now, it feels like we’re missing the mark on all three.

What do you guys think? Do you feel like the current update and event loop is working, or is it time for Gaijin to change direction? Let’s discuss.

There’s plenty of tanks they could add, but that’s too much work and pretty expensive compared to copy pasting the same tanks 5times with maybe a different camo. They should stop working on infantry for now and simply fix the current issues
They should also bring back event vehicles as techtree vehicles instead of adding multiple subtrees

…is far beyond repair with evolution - it needs revolution.

I wrote in the c+p thread:

And even that alone won’t save the game - simply because the game is stuck in obsolete game modes and gaijin has focused on making “the grind” as purpose of the game whilst they dumbed the game play down so that even a 9yo toddler can participate.

That gaijin buffs and nerfs certain vehicles and nations at will (open and hidden) and prevents with their plain stupid BR setting policy exiting gaming experience on purpose is part of the problem too - same as the MM which is a very powerful tool to create artificial success and drawbacks in order to encourage players to spend money.

Whilst players like you or me (with 25k and 30k battles) are able to play around those fully intended weaknesses, the random toddler lured into the grinding trap can’t.

I really hope that gaijin will face a financial backlash like EA (1.3 billion USD loss) which forces them to sell the game or come to the right conclusions.

The only people who seem to have this in mind are roleplayers and plainly is just a bad line of inquiry to go through
