History.
In 1930, due to pressure from Italo Balbo, Fiat engineer Celestino Rosatelli designed an upgraded version of his now elderly Fiat C.R.20 fighter. The aircraft was called C.R.30 and took up the classic layout of fighters for the time, i.e. single-engine, single-seater and biplane. The project was proposed to the Ministry of Air Force and at the beginning of 1931 a series of test specimens was ordered. The three prototypes built flew for the first time in the first half of 1932 and its good performance caused the aircraft to take part in various international competitions and events (e.g. the Zurich international air meeting in May 1932). Since the C.R.30 was not supposed to be a “mass” fighter but a palliative while waiting for the C.R.32, only a little more than a hundred examples were produced. Two of these were particular however, as they were normal examples of C.R.32 but modified by adding two boots to make them seaplanes. These examples were called Fiat C.R.30Idro and were the only two products of this type. Unfortunately, it is not known with certainty what happened to them, but they were probably scrapped to obtain the proceeds.
Armaments and propulsion.
The aircraft was armed with two 7.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns placed in the nose and synchronized with the propeller. Each gun was equipped with 500 rounds. Furthermore, up to 12 2kg anti-personnel bombs could be mounted.
As for the engine, the aircraft was powered by a 600 hp Fiat A.30 RA engine, which allowed the aircraft to reach a maximum speed of 351 km/h.
