F4D-1 (BuNo 134763) - The Fox-3 Sparrow

Boy I sure do love when gaijin removes things without sources because it came to them in a dream.

Anyway, great potential aircraft for war thunder, and I pray gaijin finally gives us the F4D-1 in the TT where it belongs and replaces the event vehicle with this. The F4D-1 always belonged in the tech tree. (I also wonder, this the F4D-1 we have ingame seem to be underperforming speed wise, as ingame it cant break Mach yet it was known for it. Not to mention the F5D can break Mach 2, yet you’re telling me this can’t break Mach 1?

I’m not sure how Gaijin would balance this one.
Probably safer to add it without the Fox-3 missile unfortunately.
But I would like to see the aircraft in game.

It’s not unbalanced at all really. It has low range, easily outpulled, can be one chaffed, and has horrible launch parameters. It’s really a gimmick if anything.

F4D-1 is already ingame. The whole point of this suggestion is that this specific F4D-1 was modified to use Aim-7Bs. The Aim-7Bs themselves have super low delta V, so the majority of their speed is coming from the aircraft.

Just a question, have you used Aim-7Cs?

It’s also supposed to be able to climb at a 70° angle.

This would be really fun to have in the TT. +1

I’d also like to have some of the planes with the beam-riding Sparrow I.

Ngl Aim-7A would be a great way to make the F3D unique.

I wonder how balanced an F6F-5K with Aim-7As would be though.

Next we need a suggestion for the Wildcat with Sparrows

AIM-7A would also be incredibly fun (and goofy) on the F7U Cutlass, which is already an absolute goober of a plane

Safe to say, early Sparrows as a whole would be great (as well as the planes that had/used them) :D

Ye. Honetly, all three of them, the Cutlass, Skyknight, and Hellcat would be very interesting vehicles if they were to received Aim-7As. I just wonder what BR the hellcat would be balanced at. Maybe around 5.0?

does this have different instruments? if so do you have any pictures of them?

The study does say something about it having a different sight, but no, sadly I don’t have any images.

edit: restructured the entire post.

Now with miniature SPAMRAAMs XD

That was my first thought - it’s a cool plane that can be more or less ‘kitbashed’ from existing art assets, so low level of effort to produce.

But how does it play out in the sky? It’s got radar missiles, and (forgive me, I’m coming back after an 8 year hiatus) there seems to be a BR floor below which you only get IR missiles, and the level where I’ve seen the base (event) plane is below the BR level where you get All Aspect IR missiles like the AIM-9L, etc.

So is it gonna get chucked in with…Late F-4s? F-14s?

Hi. The Aim-7Bs would being very similar to the Aim-7Cs that are already ingame. The Aim-7Cs are held by the F3H-2 which is at 9.0. The Aim-7Cs are super easy to dodge and have very low delta-V, however they are extremely useful at the start of the game where you can kill players in headons from 5 miles out that don’t even know you’ve launched a missile at them. The Aim-7B would do this even better as it’s ARH and it uses a K-band radar (almost no RWR in the game can detect it)

The F4D-1 would likely be 9.3. The F-14s are 12.7 and 13.0, and the F-4E/Js are (if I rememeber correctly) 11.7 and 12.0. The Aim-7s on the Phantoms and F-14s are near impossible to dodge, and the Aim-54 can easily hit targets over 20 miles away.

TL:DR the missiles held by the Phantom and Tomcat are in a WAY different league, and F4D-1 would not be facing them. It would face the F-4C which is an early phantom, although the F-4C’s Aim-7Ds are barely better than the Aim-7Cs.

Also, there’s other planes with radar missiles at 9.3, and even lower.

I’d be more than okay with this honestly, would promote Skyray players to do it’s intended role and go for bombers/anyone up super high first

Yeah, I mainly want it as a Mig-21 counter

how good would “7B” be if it was in the game
also i dont think the US gave a designated name for “Sparrow II” since the project was not finished and abruptly cut due to problem with the missiles and the compatible system
I mean you could put it as “7B” for short cut but they werent recognized and classified as Aim-7B as they never enter service

The missile itself would be comparable to the Aim-7C on the F3H-2, with the key difference being you don’t need to maintain lock with your aircraft’s radar after launching the missile.

It would be super easy to dodge, and you wouldn’t be able to lock targets near the ground, but it would be great against high alt targets.

In the July 1957 study, it was refered to as the “XAAM-N-3 Sparrow II” If it were entered into service, it would be called the AAM-N-3 before the NAVY and Airforce agreed on the Aim-(x) designation.

I’m not 100% sure, but I do believe the Sparrow II was renamed to the Aim-7B in retrospect, aswell as the Aim-7A. If they didn’t get renamed, then I can’t see why the Aim-7C wouldn’t be called the Aim-7A.
