F/A-18 Hornet (Legacy): History, Performance & Discussion

You mean F-14B-D,Rafale,Su-33 and Mig29K models? yea you’re right about that.

Which means there are things that are completely wrong on that document for the E. But I don’t know how much of a difference the 402 is vs the 400 on the C to accurately tell

No I was on about the harrier

Harrier is kinda unique in that case, its a VTOL subsonic plane that can produce huge amount of thrust in order take to off vertically and accelerate fast.

İts not conventional design in my book.

Fair enough (its just my favourite naval fighter)

Mines are Tomcat D and Rafale though Harrier is also good choice in my book.

Yes, it was never specialized as an air superiority fighter. But it’s still a pretty capable dogfighter for a bomb truck.

Absolutely I never denied that. But there is just no technical reason why it would perform better under the same conditions as the other finely tuned aircraft whose primary role is killing other aircraft.

It will be highly dependent on having lower fuel than the others, and a small window of opportunity to defeat them in close quarters because if they enter a low fuel state as well, the F-18 won’t be able to keep up. Time is not on the F-18’s side in a dogfight.

The F-18 is a fighter better off avoiding dogfights altogether and utilizing its good sensors and specially tailored Aim-120 link that the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division had worked on to raise its proficiency.

The F-18’s strong suit is its Aim-120 proficiency and data link with it.

Shame they didn’t fully integrate AMRAAM to the F14

Yeah its a shame though Gaijin can add Tomcat D with Amraams considering we got multiple vehicles that has experimental equipment.

SRAAM for one but thats different though as their was more evidence for that

Thats just one example but yea.

I think the F-18C will be a very good dogfighter in the game, it won’t be limited to 7.5g, it will have a helmet sight, no g and aoa limit. Nice. :D

It will be a good vehicle, but it isn’t a better dogfighter than the F-16 or Gripen. It’s designed for multi-role carrier operations. Depending on the ordnance, it might be the best multi-role aircraft for grb, but we will have to see.

Friendly reminder that dogfighting performance is not the only consideration for fighter design.

What’s interesting to me is that people think Hornet isn’t a dogfighter. Interesting.

I didn’t say it isn’t a dogfighter, I just said that it isn’t better than the F-16 and Gripen at dogfighting. You know, two planes designed from the ground up to be dogfighters with minimal compromises?

Not every new jet added to the game has to have the best dogfighting performance. You guys will be in for a rude awakening when stealthy jets like the F-22 and F-35 turn up and aren’t the absolute best dogfighters in history, because that isn’t their main strength. Too many people drinking the freedom cool-aid.

B b b but i thought as long as the number after the F is higher its a better dogfighter

Too many people also think that the F-22 will be worse than a Rafale/Typhoon simply because it is mainly intended to be stealthy…it has already shown extremely good dogfight performance with barely trained pilots against Rafales with pilots who have over 2000 hours.

The F-22 will absolutely be a monster in a dogfight, easily comparable to the Rafale and Typhoon, which for some reason people think are like byplanes in a dogfight lol.

The F-18, especially the C variant with EPE upgrade, will be a very good dogfighter as already proven with numerous documents. Against the F-16s, it should pretty much be better in almost everything except vertical fights, depending on the fuel and loadouts on both. Against the Gripen, it should fare fairly well, especially if that thing is fixed because it flies like a UFO and something is very clearly wrong with its flight performance.

And is their anything wrong with the f16

Every plane is one big compromise. Gripen is a good example. It has a poorer engine, because it was necessary to find an acceptable ratio of range and power to its very small size. The compromise was to sacrifice some of the performance. The F-16, originally made as a pure dogfighter lost some of its capability but became more of a multirole
