its not that it doesn’t pull enough AOA, it could if you completely disregard the airframes G limit, but it just has to much thrust, there was an interview with a pilot of a F-15, and according to him, where you pull the nose it goes, it doesn’t just sit there for the thrust like the F-16 and F/A-18

Just goes to show the utter insanity that went into the design of both the F-15QA/EX and F110 engines…
That interview is probably for an F15 with F100 engines
but the F110 could also offer slightly more power
hopefully they put the -132 engines in sometime soon

Technically a single IRIAF got A model IRST but the Iranians removed it on delivery and later readded it to an F-14 that crashed later Maybe if they had saved it they would’ve gotten the R-73 fully working on the Tomcats.
Edit: also the TCS can slave to radar and guide in missiles they only thing is that it’s range limited and still has all the drawbacks of the IRST.
No diss but the F-14D IRST is very much better than those IRSTs which is why the Tomcat D can even do that in the first place.

after all they got the r73 working on the phantoms that dont have one

but the r27 is very much better than the sparrow and now imgaine that you dont only need to defeat the radar but also the IRST of an r27 carrier

I believe one of the issues is that the F-14’s CADC didn’t like cueing up foreign missiles on it’s own radar unlike the F-4’s which already had 2+ profiles for IR missiles. So they needed an IRST to do separate cueing which the Tomcat didn’t have.

in case you didn’t know we made at least 2 attempts (at least a full scale mockups) of a SEAD eagle
on the A and B model F-15s, apparently the bump on the bottom of the nose for the B is the same stuff the swapped out the F-4Es gun with the make the F-4G
