While I’m glad to see the F-14D added to the American tech tree, why is it even named F-14D (VF-11) instead of something more generic like F-14D(R)?

because the (d)R is the one with aim120 and F14A airframe. so unless you want a 12.7 f14 at 13.7 with weaker engine and less defensive option. its the original F14D

D(R) refers to F-14A upgraded to F-14D standards.

What you’re thinking of is the NF-14A.

It should be NF-14D or NF-14 to make it actually work if it is going to get the in F-16 XL treatment. But it is basically a F-14D(R) in configuration.

No. NF-14A only has the radar and launch systems. F-14D(R) is full overhaul (engines, missiles, avionics etc)

edit: NF-14A does not have F-14D radar.

There was no TWS firing before (and after) 1990.

All AMRAAM were test fired with AWG-9 was in STT mode

But I don’t see how the NF-14A would be in D(R) configuration when the testbed aircraft was not.

In other words, the F-14 need F-14D avionics to fire AMRAAM in TWS mode. That would be an NF-14D, an F-14A with F-14D avionics, which is configurationally the same as F-14D(R).
