i found F14A from 1988 with IRST system i think
it had a DOGFIGHT mode
That’s TCS
Yup
oh whats TCS do
I agree, but the Aim-120 kinda completes the F-14. The Sparrow isn’t as effective in the ranges that the AMRAAM are.
From 40-100km is where the Aim-54 shines.
From 5km to 40km is where the Aim-120 shines
From 0-5km is where the AIm-9 Shines.
Without the AMRAAM, it goes like this:
From 40-100km is where the Aim-54 shines.
From 5km to 19km is where the Aim-7 shines
From 0-5km is where the AIm-9 Shines.
It’s missing a very important chunk of the engagement ranges. 40-20km is where BVR in Warthunder is the most effective. So even though you’re right that the Aim-54 operating correctly would be great in PvP, having the AMRAAM to complement it seems even better.
Also it’s just freakin cool seeing a Tomcat with AMRAAMs.
In a 1v1 BVR engagement, one reason the F-14 isn’t dominant between 20-40km is the current absence of PAL (Pilot Automatic Lock-on) mode.
The AWG-9 radar on the F-14A/B was upgraded several times in the late 80s and 90s, and one of those upgrades was PAL. This is basically an ACM mode with a range of 27-30km(with P-STT, NOT PD-STT iirc), you can launch AIM-7 or AIM-54 from further out.
Moreover, a properly implemented AIM-54 would undoubtedly remain a threat even at 8-10km ranges(ofc sparrows and sidewinders are better at this range).
If you have a source for PAL, that could be a gamechanger if added.
Agreed.
Biggest problem is radar and weapons stuffs are written at NAVAIR -1A manual, which is actually classified afaik.
I don’t even know how Heatblur modeled PAL.
Seems F-14B(U) shares same VDI/VDIG-R symbols with F-14D.
GBU-24E/B abilities too, would be nice to actually have an EGBU in the US roster for once.
Should have that bomb on the B as well per the navy’s press.
“A new guidance and control unit has been modified to incorporate GPS electronics, GPS antenna, IMU and software for precision GPS/INS guidance. This F-14B upgrade and the F-14D aircraft will be able to employ the new GBU-24E/B once the aircraft software, developed and tested at Point Mugu, is fielded. This is a significant warfighting enhancement that will enable the F-14 to attack targets in all weather conditions with a precision guided munition.”
Yeah this photo is actually B(U) because you can see ECM blisters at wings glove section, which had F-14A and F-14B.
Also, afaik A model never had any GPS upgrades entire the service.
Yep, and the B we have in game has to be a B(U) due to a myriad of things, most notably the fact it can already carry JDAMs.
Really no reason as to why it should be carrying standard GBU-24s right now.
hey guys, getting close to the A model soon, I really, really want to fly the F14, not only is it beautiful but it also seems a blast to play, is it still good to fly in current matchmaker or should I skip it because its now outclassed and relegated to the sidelines? Thank you!
Pretty sure there’s better aircraft at the same BR, but that shouldn’t stop you. The F-16A OCU is considered the worst 13.7 by a fair amount of people but it is a blast to play!
Shame, I know the F18A is a much better pick (mostly because of BR compression lets not kid ourselves, it shouldnt be 12,3), I still want to fly it even though its past its prime… Maybe one day a BR spread increase will make it shine again, who knows.
Decompression would fix so many problems for so many aircraft. Too many aircraft (and ground vehicles by extension) are in a weird limbo. Put them down they’re OP, keep them where it is and it’s outmatched
I had that exact experience with the F80A yesterday, several games against props, not a single thing those poor planes could do against me, even if I missed I could just extend away and in 20 seconds I’m gaining a kilometer of alt and am 3 kms away.
However you raise the BR and suddenly the F80A is fighting F2h2’s, Barougans, Sabres and migs.
