DISCLAIMER: M1 abrams are not included in the event and are shown above for visual purposes only

Operation Thunder Overview:
An event based on a what-if late 1970s Cold War gone hot scenario and nato training exercises that would have a NATO-themed team and a Warsaw Pact-themed team battle it out on a large-scale map until one of the win conditions is reached.

The teams would be composed of mid-Cold War vehicles from both NATO and Warsaw Pact nations. The Blue Team would be based on NATO, while the Red Team would be based on the Warsaw Pact. All vehicles are ideally in service prior to 1980 however a few exceptions had to be made as stand in’s for vehicles/ vehicle models not currently available in the game. Those such vehicles are listed with their irl counterparts in parentheses.

WIN CONDITIONS:
A) Kill 120 enemies.
B) Have the Enemy team no longer be fighting (No active players on the enemy team)
C) Run out the timer with more kills than the enemy team.

TEAMS:

BLUEFOR

M60A1 AOS (M60A1 RISE), M60A2, Leopard 1, M551, RakJPZ 2, M113 Tow, M48A2 G A2, Centurion MK10, Leopard 1A2 ITALY , Magach 2 ( M48A3)

REDFOR

T55A, BMP-1, PT-76B, T54 (1951), Type 59, Type 69, T62, ASU-57, T10M, BMP-2

Location:
The location would be set in the North German plains to represent the expected general area where a Soviet invasion of Europe would occur, given the topography. The map would be 5x5km (aprox. 3x3 miles)
And would feature small hills, forests, farmland, houses, and a highway littered with both abandoned, intact, and burning cars and trucks. The large map would help to create a realistic setting for the battle.

Each match would take place at day or night conditions with the weather being overcast or storm.

Technical details:
The Battle would be set in simulator mode, with a player choosing from one of two teams. Each team would be given a set of 10 tanks that a player can choose to use, similar to how the Great War event was, these tanks will not be from only one nation.
The player can spawn however many times they would like, as long as they have enough SL to do so, similar to how air simulator battles and enduring confrontation work.

All vehicles would include all modifications (with the exception of scout drones ) unlocked and would use basic crew levels, with the exception that if a player owns the vehicle they choose to spawn, they would get the highest crew level they have for a crew slot trained on that vehicle.

If a player owns a usable tank, they could use any camouflage and decals on that vehicle that they have unlocked and in use (if this is technically feasible to accomplish).

When the match timer reaches 5 minutes left, all players will hear an air-raid siren start, which will continue until there are 10 seconds left in the match. Once the timer runs out, a Nuke would go off as a pure visual effect to explain why the battle has ended. The nuke would not be player-controlled or even dropped by an aircraft; rather, it would go off the moment the timer hits zero. The team that has the most amount of enemy kills would win. The nuke would be a visual effect only, and players would not see the cutscene that is shown when a nuke is dropped in a realistic battle but would rather remain at their vehicals to witness the nuke in first person.

The match would use a timer to prevent the match from lasting for an absurd amount of time and would be longer than the timer used in regular RB matches.

Aircraft/helicopters would be unavailable for this event due to the exclusion of anti aircraft vehicles that would limit the available stereotypical tanks for each nation.

If a player is teamkilled for any reason, a kill point will be automatically awarded to the enemy team, regardless of intention. Besides this yea killing would be punished as normal.

REWARDS:
There could be potential rewards for this event in the form of decals, decorations, camouflages, and even maybe titles or profile pictures.

This idea was inspired by my love of Cold War history, the Age of Tanks TV series, games such as GHPC, Battlefield, and the song “99 Luftballons/99 Red Balloons”.

This is A work in progress right now, so that I can receive feedback on what could be improved and suggestions for new ideas. Please keep discussions NONPOLITICAL. Also, as a note, it’s not 100% historically accurate for balancing and in-game limitations on available vehicles and mechanics.

This is something I would play in a heartbeat, and what I look for in simulator battles

Obviously I’d love a historical event. But perhaps check the actual service dates of the vehicles in question (and pick a specific time frame, e.g. Nov. 1983 as a result of Able Archer). Your current list contains vehicles introduced in the 80s (Bradley) but then also tanks retired in the 60s (M41A1, ASU-57). Also why is China here?

its a WIP for now also was trying to keep it in a certain br range, shouldve seen what it was before i decided to do pre set lineups lol, they are subject to change though

this could definitely be a problem but definetly a +1 from me :)

For roughly an 8.3 lineup on each side, late 1962/early 1963 (Cuban Missile Crisis gone hot) is a pretty good hook. T-54/55/62s, Centurions, M47/48/60s (but not the AOS; that’s from all the way in 1972); PT-76, M41s, AMX-13 (base model), Charioteer; T-10M, M103, and Conqueror; ASU-57/85, M56 and M50, though unfortunately no kanonen. No IFVs though as those were developed in the 70s mostly.
Additionally I’d advocate for historically present ammunition types only, e.g. no HEAT-FS nor APDS for the T-10 as those were introduced in the late 60s.

Unfortunately the M60A1 isnt in game right now

Only in the Italian tree, yeah. Though the A1 only entered production in October 1962 so it would probably be excluded from a 1962 historical event anyways.

I am John War Thunder

Needs more APC/IFVs, such as Marder, BTR, BMP-1, etc.

Removed due to service dates of those vehicles

I see, anyway bmp2 entered service in early 1980s.

If you want to play a worsen version of Gunner, HEAT, PC! then go for it. But in general anything portraying as realistic in War Thunder tend to fall under the conditions of “for balance” that will cause manipulation for sake of fun gameplay, as much as I want improvement for simulator ground battles. Regarding your concept, ‘killing’ a set number of enemy vehicles is very unrealistic, if you want the realism then the destroy every enemy vehicle is relative to the objective;

You could consider:

  • Imobilize enemy forces;
  • Hold a sector for a set amount of time;
  • Capture and hold multiple sectors throughout the map;

The timer and the inability to spawn more vehicles is the ever last resort to finish a match, not the main option.

For the set of vehicles also are extremely unrealistic, I don’t understand why you put Israel and China in this when France and East Germany could be easily in since you specifically mentioned a Soviet Union invasion of west Europe in the Cold War (just Gunner, HEAT, PC!):

For a special event you should consider special vehicles, here’s my list of vehicles that could be considered for this concept of special event.

Nations NATO TFCMA
*
USA
USSR
*
West Germany
East Germany
*
Israel France
China Poland
*
United Kingdom
Czechoslovakia

As for vehicles, the following with some that should be exclusive to the event or possible future addition after said event:

MBTs NATO TFCMA
Breakthrough/Multi-task
M1 Abrams
T-64A/AK*
M60A1 RISE (P)
T-55AM-2**
Sniping
Chieftain Mk.10
T-62M
Support
M48A5
T-55A
Leopard 1A2
T-54AM***

*T-64AK being command variant, should have enhanced radio coverage meaning better communication, on par to others NATO counterparts
**T-55AM-2 either under East Germany flag or Czechoslovakia flag
***T-54AM Polish-made modernization of the vehicle

For sake of balance between these vehicles, specific types of ammunition or older models should be considered.

IFVs NATO TFCMA
Main vehicles
M3 Bradley
BMP-2
Marder A1
BMP-1IP

*GAZ 50 not to be considered final, it’s a BTR-60 APC with a BMP-1 turret system without 9M14 mount.

*Object 934 not to be considered final, filler, gimmick.

Trivia; there’s a total of 8 unique vehicles that could be added forward in form of a American, West German, Czechoslovakian, Polish, East German and Sovietic vehicles.

Considering the rest of the concept, is very straight forward I’ll not get in details as I mentioned before regarding the main objectives, regardless at the end of the day the likely map or reference map will be used if this concept is ever considered would be Fulda, either a new one or a expansion of the existing map.

Although my criticism for the vehicle selection, concept and how it will be and could be implemented to War Thunder, one way or another nonsensical vehicles would be added anyways, so I kinda agree with your points.

To conclude I’ll keep my negative vote for the poll until improvements with the gamemode objective and vehicles available for the nations.

Dude, it’s 8.7 tanks and below with only 10 tanks Available per team for realism and game limitations. Also it’s using in game tanks only also it’s pre 80s for the most part, btw I decided abrams was a hard no, half the non nato tanks are also standing in for tanks that arnt in game (magach 2 is a standin for the m48a3 for example)

also no duh its in fulda gap, thats where an invasion was expected to take place and it in the north german plains

Btw this is for a event not for all sim battles it just so happens to be in sim.

Also killing a certain number of enemies is just considered destroying the enemy’s forces.

Also to address your concerns about this, players can spawn an infinite amount of times and if the enemy team decides to call it quits is when players would be inactive and trigger that win condition, the timer would be probably an hour or so and Is just there to prevent the match from lasting for a crazy amount of time.

For battle rating 8.7 and lower this would shift the power to one side only if this isn’t clear, using battle rating to “balance” vehicles in this concept of event won’t work at all. And if I had to check great majority of the vehicles I cited aren’t past 1985. As I mentioned before this won’t work without massive changes, if the M1 Abrams doesn’t fit and you’re using Magach 2 to represent M48A3 then what’s the point of working on it, which is why I don’t think a event like this without major improvements for simulator ground battles would be possible.

Maybe this wasn’t clear enough, but there’s is:

I’ll agree with the capacity to spawn infinites amount of time, I can’t argue otherwise.

Exactly, all vehicles are pre 1980 with a few exceptions for stand ins, there’s a reason its the aos instead of the rise p

My criteria was pre 1980 and 8.7 and below, and for the most part that criteria was met
