DASS is being/has been upgraded this year, and another upgrade is planned in the early 2030’s, snapped this at RIAT25;
Oh Eurofighter can take damocles pod too ?
Indeed.
Maws should still warn it of missiles unless its maws is terrible. Also I would be surprised if its AESA radar cannot act as a maws because even older Russian pesas act as a secondary maws, so they should’ve gotten plenty of warning
Did India actually buy meteors?
Of course
But it’s to note that all we have for now is suppositions
Afaik none of what is said is confirmed, be it the “Spectra not detecting” or the “200+km shot”
Yes, but the firsts are yet to be delivered afaik
I mean considering both sides are saying it’s 200+ km I’d wager that it’s the longest range air to air kill of all time. Longest confirmed kill before hand was 170km from r37m which is a 500 kg class missile while pl-15e is around 200 kg and was shot from 200+km. And it was a confirmed kill, so considering both sides are saying over 200km… definitely doesn’t look good for rafale
Nothing is Wonder Weapon (and irl had so many variable that would make several jet that are “Theoritically” superior, beaten up), and Rafale being finally killed in action doesn’t stop Rafale Fanboys to fanboying Rafale, like how many time the American Mains booing Soviet/Russian Aircraft, they still had their fandom, so I don’t understand what’s your point unless you really have some vendetta towards French Main.
All that’s confirmed for now is :
- A Rafale was shot down (along some russian fighters)
- Missiles were flying on both sides
- The area was filled with planes everywhere, and the whole situation was pretty confused
Regarding the “200+” km claim, i’d be interested in the sources (one from each side) if you have them (MP if it’s considered inappropriate in this topic due to a recent conflict)
While it does not sound brilliant for Rafale, i think context is also important :
- The country using the Rafales had made clear its intent to strike when and where
- The Rafales did not have meteors, only first gen MICAs and ground strike weaponry (decent for BVR in the 2000s, not so much in the 2020s)
- No Rafales were shot down in the following days, while the confrontation continued (some tactic evolution maybe ?)
- India wants to buy more Rafale, which is surprising (and i don’t even mean it ironically) for a fighter which “does not look good” (and it’s not like India has no negociating power, they were in MRCA still and apparently now want to skip it in favor of Rafale)
What other options do they have? From what I remember they’re buying naval rafales to supplement their mig-29k fleet, what other naval planes are real options? Fa18s are much worse than the rafale, India already bought more mig-29ks, the su-33 is hopelessly outdated, and they don’t want the f-35 because they want to build their 5th gens domestically. Realistically rafale is their only option and they already have other variants of it in their fleet
Not naval
The naval one was already signed
The one they want to go after is the “end” of the MRCA (called MRCA 2.0) deal for ground based fighters (up to 114)
options in the deal included EF, Gripen, F18, Su35s and Rafale
I’m confused, wasn’t that the original rafale deal from like 2010?
Ok so full story short, sorted in time :
- india wants to buy up to ~130 fighters, they make a bid called MRCA
- They get into talks with Dassault
- They cancel MRCA and select 36 Rafales
- Then there’s the naval bid, in the meantime, they restart the MRCA for up to 114 fighters (MRCA 2.0)
- They select Rafale M for Vikrant
- A Rafale most likely gets smoked by a PL-15
- They cancel the MRCA 2.0 and get into talks with the french gov and Dassault for 60-114 Rafales
Arent the new Rafales to be produced in India as well? Because that seems to be a big W for Indian domestic know how and experience
another point for context, the 1st day of this operation when India lost Raf & 2 other jet, their was a clear intention of India to not target Pakistan military asset like anti air site, so no SEAD or PAF fighter, so of course on this context loses was innevitable.
Also from what i’ve understand the big card of PAF was their SAAB awacs, which I don’t remember the name.
Also does someone have already thinking that Raf & other jet that have been shot down as run down countermeasures, bcause who knowns but maybe evade few or dozen missile before ?
That is the deal yes, big transfer of technology overall.
It may have been faulty in some way.
