is that the same as NEZ or different ?
just the british term for NEZ
Much like Reheat for afterburner
AMRAAMs being produced for export and to backfill ANG units.
Deployed squadrons will carry the latest missiles the 260 JATM and the 174B.
120 is still a good a missile.
Morvans point makes sense when you consider F-22 production was not restarted due to cost.
Cost even when you have an unlimited defence budget still factors into decision making.
As for Meteor it is by all accounts a very good missile. How much better than a 120D I dont know. Gaijin will also punish it for not having an AESA seeker.
For those who seem to be huffing the copium. No - AMRAAM is not in the same league as Meteor…

As for why the US or China didn’t opt for ramjets - that’s up to them. Different nations have different operational requirements and that feeds into the kind of weaponry you pursue. A missile that makes sense for the UK will not necessarily tally with what the Chinese want and visa versa.
Ramjet AAMs make sense if you have a smaller air force - less planes - that way you can effectively extend your ‘reach’ without needing more aircraft/sorties. It also synergises well with the Stealth/Non-Stealth mix that most EU Air Forces are going for. F-35s can cue up targets for Typhoons to sling Meteors at from over the horizon for example…
TLDR
If Gaijin model Meteor with anything like the manufacturer’s specs … our ARB maps are going to seem very small, very quickly.
You don’t know how Meteor works do you?
The Ramjet is ‘burning’ until the point of impact. That’s how you get a large pursuit range - because you are effectively keeping the projectile powered throughout it’s travel from launch to hit.
You will not outrun it. You will not bleed it of energy. In fact the only way you can possibly deal with it if launched at within 100km will be to put a bloody big mountain between you and the missile or hope that you can CM/ECM/notch it.
This is a lesson that US Mains probably need to get used to sooner rather than later.
Midcourse retargeting is going to be so nice.
Given that the Chinese and Russians use ramjet motors for antiship missiles, it may simply be that it is cost prohibitive for them to use it for air to air as the values of air targets is comparatively low compared with for example a naval ship which is in the billions of dollars and is a far more important target.
Usually better technologies are first put on missiles that tackle high value targets before those technologies are produced at scale enough to find their way onto cheaper missiles. Your line of thought that ramjets have to be inferior to standard rocket motor designs just because the US and China isn’t doing it doesn’t make much sense when ramjets are more complex and costly than standard rocket designs.
It would be like saying that because the Japanese used AESA radar in their AAM-4B missile before anyone else, and because the US and Chinese weren’t doing the same at the time, there must be a reason why mechanical radar is superior to AESA.
I think we should temper our expectations in regards to Meteor.
In gameplay purposes -
R-77M will be the best and maybe thats accurate it has an AESA seeker and is dual pulse.
Aim260 similar with dual pulse
Then Meteor and PL-12
It is both impressive and questionable that Russia is able to scale R-77M at any capacity at this point.
We’re now going into rabbit-hole territory. Next you’re going to be telling us that not every single thing every made by Murica isn’t the best, biggest, coolest thing ever to be made in all of space/time.
I feel like US kids should spend a teeny bit more time learning that the fields of engineering, science and technology were a thing before America was even a country…
I’d lean on questionable. Just saying.
Would YOU want to hang a missile under your aircraft that has been made in a hurry with electronics scavenged from a washing machine?
Launch success zone.
What the Americans call NEZ
???
We know Gaijin will give Russian kit the benefit of the doubt if they find an article stating an AESA seeker it eill have one. Even if they are limited production.
Yes was looking at a different missile, or an earlier version of it.
My mistake
It’s not going to burn forever
Chances are the missile shown isn’t even an AMRAAM but a MICA
More like 100km probably
Yet PL-17 and AIM-424, both of which are for high value targets, use rockets even though both are very new. And the Chinese had ramjet missiles before the PL-17, USA also had lots of experience with ramjets although this is mostly experimental. As for value, some of the ramjet antiship missiles they have are not rated for larger ships.
I believe it is kinematically stronger than 120D but idk about something like PL-15 or AIM-260
Forgetting the PL-15?
Brother, what the f?
“It’s not going to burn forever”
It will burn longer than a rocket of the equivalent weight/size. How is this hard to comprehend?
“Chances are the missile shown isn’t even an AMRAAM but a MICA”
You don’t know that. It would make sense for MBDA to compare it over AMRAAM because most customers would have AMRAAMs as their standard MRAAM.
“More like 100km probably”
Now you are into coping territory.
“Yet PL-17 and AIM-424, both of which are for high value targets, use rockets even though both are very new. Again - the Chinese aren’t the EU or the US. It is entirely possible for two people to reach the same results that they need without using the exact same methodology.
“I believe it is kinematically stronger than 120D but idk about something like PL-15 or AIM-260”
Coping again.
Let it go mate. I understand the desire to root for the home team but at this point you seem determined to try and argue that unless it is made in America it cannot possibly be good.
wouldn’t be too surprising since they manufacture both
if meteor has anywhere close to the range of sm-6, pl-17, r-37m, aim-424 or izd-810 colour me surprised.
Because those missiles are more than double the weight and more than double the range of meteor.
