Eurofighter Typhoon (UK versions) - Technical data and discussion (Part 3)

This is like the world’s most pointless discussion I’ve ever seen

35k ft and mach 1.5 I think are fairly reasonable guesses for it actually.

So why say it can’t do this and this if you don’t know which launch speed it was fired at, what altitude it was fired at either. Assumptions?

I only continued this discussion because someone had it pausing in mid air at the target 15s before it got there

30k ft @ mach 1.5. Aim-120D is going about mach 1.5 and would take 100s to cover 100km.

Meteor is probably impacting at more like mach 2.4+ and 10 seconds earlier

So no idea where you are getting that Meteor and Aim-120D would have the same impact velocity at 100km from

yes, so you can make up launch conditions that the source didnt give

I dont think you understand this

if they dont give launch conditions for that kind of claim the safest and best assumption is it is an idealized figure

Choice A) Pick maximum altitude and maximum launch speed for the Typhoon that is 55k ft and mach 2.3. Conditions the Aircraft is basically never actually at.

Choice B) Pick reasonable operating altitude. 35k ft is quite a typical figure for the Typhoon for various things and mach 1.5. Its supercruise speed, and again, another figure used quite a bit for a lot of other things for the Typhoon.

Now, Gaijin will probably claim that the Meteor can only acheive its maximum range and speed with extreme launch conditons, because… Gaijin. But that doesnt mean they are defacto correct either.

Only the americans have a habbit of giving figures for best case scenarios. MBDA actually have quite the reputation for massively underselling their weapons. Like they state ASRAAM can only do mach 3, but Flame has good sources for arguing more like mach 5

Anyway. Im heading off. But its funny seeing American mains already trying to nerf the Meteor before its even been added. They must be rather scared of it being added.

for missile ejection delay 😄

Or option c something that’s favorable for the missile but still well within the EFT capabilities like Mach 2-2.2 at 45k

It’s throttleable so I assume it wouldn’t be full boost up until terminal right?

This research paper(!) study from last year details the energy on impact of the Meteor vs the AMRAAM. My spanish is not great so I’m unsure of how valid this is but the actual meat is in english. I have had academic papers accepted as sources in my AMRAAM-ER top speed increase bug report though.

but that doesn’t mean anything, people with at least one neuron gonna notch it.
So Meteor is just conveniently nothing special for Gaijin to spend labour for nerfing it.

If it’s throttleable wouldn’t burn time be dictated by target data to give the best performance at terminal?

ive looked at this one before, they say they dont account for the intake’s effects on drag apart from just base drag. i dont think it will be usable for bug reports.

Yeah I saw that. Outside of floor values MBDA is tight-lipped about detailed values.

i expect that itll burn for much longer than any other AAM but as soon as that ends, it will also lose speed faster than any other AAM due to how draggy it is compared to a regular missile

The only ingame comparison we have is the PL-15 which is a dual pulse rocket. I will have to do like a 100km shot and see what the data shows including how the terminal booster affects impact velocity and overall time to impact. But I’m busy with Minecraft atm so maybe someone else can test or already has.

LSZ?

Really struggling with the throttleable aspect aren’t we

It’s designed to conserve as much fuel as possible. The “idea” it’ll run out of fuel in any meaningful engagement (~160 km) in War Thunder is funny.
