Personally, im expecting no LOAL. Only LOBL, which would both limit range to lock range and HOBS to Gimball limits for all these new missiles if/when they are added. Seems like a fair way to level the playing field a bit and prevent them from becoming too oppresive

Isn’t it a bit strange that the ASRAAM has no DL? The CAMM is a variant of the ASRAAM with literally only the seeker changed, right? I don’t think changing just the seeker would allow for DL compatibility.

No mention of datalink on any of its marketing materials and nothing about it in the Tornado F.3 manuals which were last amended in 2009.

Could only be in the seeker or electronic sections, neither mention anything about datalink or antenna.

Datalink is not required for LOAL. Asraam will be just fine without datalink

Indeed, I don’t have concerns over it. Also data linking to an IR missile removes the key benefits of it being a passive missile, the trade off is you will get improved pK at longer ranges from that DL capability against a threat that cannot detect the DL emissions, but if the enemy RWR picks up your DL transmissions to said missile its lost the element of surprise.

Its a trade off for sure, depends on where you place the weight, does your enemy have advanced RWR’s that might detect the DL emissions as such begin defending much earlier? Or the better midcourse guidance more preferable?

I think the next-generation IR missiles will primarily target those using lowaltitude, multipath targets, but if the seeker performance is not significantly different from the 9M, I’m concerned about having to rely on IOG for side angles and head-ons.

On a BFBS news segment on the Raven SPAA system sent to Ukraine, they claimed “tracking” out to 25km, issue there is no target conditions, so all aspect? rear aspect? Reheat or no? These are important factors in determining seeker performance.

Well no not most likely. They were talking about the missiles performance, not in relation to a specific target set. We simply do not know.

As it has no datalink we will just be lobbing them in general vicinity of the target until the seeker can see it as a way for them to model it

Well we know they wont be tested against Russian aircraft due to the proximity of LOC and that the VKS/VVS rarely goes over the LOC excluding the Su-25 strikes which are not as frequent since the use of the FABs by the Su-34 fleet.

Well the claims of ASRAAM performance are independent of the Raven SPAA. And ASRAAM existed before the Geran drone existed. We simply cannot invent a situation that gives the most favourable figure. We simply do not know. You cannot take a position on it as we don’t have that information.
