That article is being purposefully misleading about the costs in order to manufacture a unit cost that is just slightly above the unit cost of an F-22:
It is factoring the development, procurement, and future upgrade costs into the unit cost of the Eurofighter; but only the development and procurement costs of the F-22.
The UK purchased 160 Eurofighters, but because the Tranche 1 Jets were planned to be retired earlier than the other tranches they decided to split the entire programme cost over just the 107 jets of the later tranches. That’s not how unit cost works, we purchased those 53 Tranche 1 jets; if the Government decides to retire them early (as questionable of a decision as that may be) that doesn’t mean they never existed.
This number is fudged, their Euro-fighter figure is the total programme cost to the UK (at the time) divided by the total number of serviceable airframes post Tranche 1 retirement (their 107 number), their F-22 figure is the US DOD’s figure for the F-22 Development (per their footnote) not including maintenance or upgrade costs. I’ll note that the article is from before the the Tranche 1 retirement and point out that’s also not how unit cost works.
Also lmao the register? That’s a tech news tabloid. It’d be like going to The Sun for a review of the Abrams. For context some other hard hitting journalism from the same author (Lewis Page, noted climate change denier, we’ll come back to this later), “Robot cop called in after MAD BONGER blown up in LIQUID MARIJUANA EXPLOSION”, “ULTRASONIC BOLLOCK BLASTERS help Hawkmoth battle The Bat”, “Forty Canadian Birds BONKING against windows EVERY MINUTE”, “Female blood-suckers zero in on human prey by smelling our breath”, & more.
Truly the pinnacle of Journalism here folks, but I digress, I bring this up (and the Climate denial stuff earlier) to point out that he’s got very little actual knowledge in procurement and a lot in writing click-bait and massaging facts & figures to support his viewpoint, in this case UK MoD’s procurement being wasteful, which he conveniently he has a book on. Unrelatedly, he’s playing climate change denial on hard mode, claims it’s good for the planet lmao
If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to have a shower, because I honestly forgot how bad 2000s/2010s tabloid “journalism” was in terms of racism & sexism.
Should be an element of the Praetorian DASS, at least the location of targets through radiation emissions, it’s a well known feature of most modern ECM/EW kits but I am not too sure if it shares functionality with GMTI/Ground radar modes and the Litening III, however, given the highly advanced nature of LIII and the EFT sensor suite i’d take the gamble of saying it’s possible
Being able to slave the radar to an RWR contact via the DASS Display is something that would make the jet much nicer to use, and seems to be realistic considering a picture we have of said DASS Format.
The person who tuned the flight model, you are the best)))
The person who tuned the plane itself - you are just awesome)))
PS
The Typhoon flies in stock with overloads of up to 13G with a top crew, when installing the PPK module, the pilot is so filled with excitement that he manages to pull the throttle to the complete destruction of the structure))
A snail as always…
PS
And yes, you can fly in with completely torn off planes and get repaired)
I remember IL 28 being able to fly without wings and the u could land on enemy AF because u counted as dead. Then kill all landing planes with ur turret.
