technically possible, yes. done IRL and cleared to carry that? no.
was confirmed with an EF engineer. its why you never see one with more than 8 missiles. there are 2 restrictions in which missiles can be carried where and thats the ITSPL which is only IR missiles and the MELs which are only ARH(meteor, aim-120). every other pylon can be used for either ir or arh. so technically it would even be 12, not 10.
but again, its only theoretically possible, not done IRL
for war thunder though it should be possible because gaijin only cares about theoretical possibility
The term you’re looking for is “absolutely” possible, along with “not done by air forces”.
The delay for the reversal is 0.2-0.5 s. Everything also tracks the IR signature
idk if absolutely is the correct word here as the integration of weapons on the EF include changes to the FBW system due to the massive instability of the aircraft.
I reckon 50% of the hard point limiations are entirely in software, the other half could probably be modified reasonably easily if the need ever arrisen. The Typhoon has never deployed in a role where its needed that amount of air-to-air firepower and therefore its never been needed. In its Primary role of QRA, saving weight is a big deal and I can see them taking a deliberately lighter load. For longer range missions, fuel tanks are pretty standard anyway.
British Typhoons did deploy to Syria with great effect but a lot of their hardpoints were used up with A2G weapons and only a limited self defence loadout in A2A
its entirely software. all hardpoints have the necessary mechanical and electrical interface for missile rails
Aren’t some of the belly mounts semi-recessed and configured speicifically for Aim-120/Meteor? (Im not overly knowledgable on this, so could be wrong, but I thought someone mentioned that somewhere else)
They were designed for AMRAAM and then Meteor too, with a special rail similar to how the ASRAAM was integrated onto the F-16 and software development its not like it would be impossible, but its not worth it because it would be expensive to reprogramme the software to calculate the flight parameters for carrying a bomb or something in that hardpoint. It would probably be cheaper to make something like an AMRAAM into an ATGM with a HEAT warhead than do that, a Eurofighter shouldn’t really ever conduct combat operations without A2A weaponry.
Yeah, that is what I assumed. But the wing pylons though are the main set that could probably be configured to whatever was needed
yes the semi recessed on the plane body are only Aim120/Meteor and the outermost wing pylons are Aim9/ASRAMM/Iris-T only the 3 other Pylons on each wing can carry both
well yes, i was talking about the wing pylons(which excludes the ITSPLs btw)
the MELs are designed to fit AMRAAM shaped things though i am not sure what the electrical interface is.
i was able to find this datasheet https://www.redimec.com.ar/contenido/productos/pdf/1429519178_1.pdf
though it would appear that cobham no longer has this website
So 4 AMRAAM min, 2 IR AAM min and then up to 6 additional IR or BVR missiles. That is quite a loadout, so I reckon first Typhoon is going to have some restrictions, I could see AMRAAM only on the belly mounts and a cap of 4 or 6 IR missiles, the rest limited intially to basic A2G on the first few Typhoons and Fuel Tanks
i’m expecting a limit of 4+2 + FT, LGBs and Litening
Only issue with that though is were any of the early Typhoons “equipped” for LGBs and Litening? (especially assuming first is likely going to be a prototype variant) I know its a software thing, but that doesnt appear to be a thing until Tranch 1 block 5 and not properly till Tranch 2 Block 10 (based upon what I can find with a quick google) , so first 2 are probably going to be little to no A2G power outside maybe some unguided weapons. So im expecting 4 BVR 4-6 IR and that to be about it intially
might have been a tranche 2 thing yea…
though apparently IRIS-T wasnt fully integrated(digital) until block 10 either…
Im really not expecting IRIS-T or ASRAAM respectively on any Typhoon for quite a white anyway. Im barely expecting an Aim-9 with IRCCM initially. The more handicaps we promote, hopefully the sooner we’ll get one.
But personally I reckon Gen 5 IR added on late strike aircraft like late Tornado IDS end of 2024, so maybe sometime 2025 for Gen 5 on the Typhoon
Here’s to hoping they can figure out the CM + IR rework by then.
Yeah… Though if in doubt, 27mm Mauser will always work.
I think it could be 4 BVR + 4 IR or 6 BVR + 2 IR.
I think they only limits the version of missiles(ex, no 9L for british and german F-4s) and not the quantity of missiles, at least now…
