Description:
Riepilogo
Back in 2024, the Italian Air Force realized that a new problem would have soon enveloped the main fighter line, made mainly of Eurofighter Typhoon. Indeed, 27 aircrafts of said line were in the old Trance 1 configuration, from the first Eurofighter batch ever realized. Not only these units could not be upgraded like more modern trances, like 2 and 3, but they were also reaching their fixed phase out deadline, scheduled in 2027-2028. Thus a new order was elaborated, one that aimed at replacing the aging aircraft with one the latest standard the eurofighter consortium could offer. The order was first revealed in the DPP (documento programmatico pluriennale, aka multi year planning document ) 2024-2026, where it was revealed that the Italian air force placed an order for 24 new units to replace the already mentioned 26 units (initially they were 27, but one was lost in Australia during an international exercise, where it crashed near the shore). What is interesting about this order the amount of financial resources invested for the acquisition of these new units, which reach the staggering amount of more than 7 billions, clearly more than enough to just buy the new units. As the document stated, most of the money will be mainly used to fund the development of new systems for the new machines, acquire new weapons, and fund the upgrade packages that will be applied in the future to the already existing fleet of T2 and T3 machines, alongside maintenance. Initially, unlike what was predicted by many newspapers, it looked like the air force wanted the new unit as soon as possible, probably without many of the upgrades that would have been finalized later in the future and with the “base” MK0 AESA radar, an already finished and in service product but clearly inferior to the new MK1 and MK2 radars, currently undergoing tests. But this ain’t the case anymore, as it was confirmed that the first aircraft will be delivered by 2028, so it’s possible that they will actually receive new features, as initially predicted. As for the radar, initially the CEO stated that the chosen one was the most basic and existing variant, the MK0, while now, according to the Italian newspaper RID, it seems that the air force is still undecided on which model they want to pick, including in the equation all three different models, MK0, 1, and 2. As for other systems, it’s very likely that the pilots will have access to the new Striker MK2, large area display (LAD), which should be ready by 2028, Litening V (already in service), Sniper, new DASS self defence system, loyal wingmen (even if it’s a little bit unlikely, given that such a feature won’t probably be ready by 2028) and lastly AMK kit, it the consortium will include it in the NG (next gen) configuration. As for armaments, the T4 late will be able to feature an upgraded and more powerful array of multirole weapons, such as Iris-t block 2, Meteor block 2, Stratus series, Brimstone 3, Spear 3, and many more weapons, that will make these aircraft a significant upgrade over the existing EFAs.
