Background

Hi there, I’ve been a War Thunder player since 2013 and one of the issues I’ve seen many players complain about since the introduction of Ground battles is CAS. In a primarily ground based game mode the introduction of air assets introduced the problem of possible imbalance and difficulty in managing and balancing.

Often I’ve seen the suggestion that CAS should be entirely removed from GRB in order to allow the ground based modes to breathe a little easier, and make balancing decisions that much easier. It’s a universal truth across gaming that players generally dislike dying to things they have no real way of countering, people say it largely feels unfair and un fun.

However… Personally I don’t think this is a complete solution. It completely removes the depth that air assets add to the game mode, the need for an entire class of vehicle in game (AA) and it’s not realistic to how wars have been fought over the past ~100 years


Nuclear Thunder

As many of you know we recently had our yearly April Fools event, this year it was “Nuclear Thunder”
It had a lot of issues, but overall I think it was a step in the right direction for the game. A lot of the community responded positively and we even got a rare BVVD message promising it’d be back.
As we know our April Fools events are usually a test for things that might be implemented in a similar way in the future.

One of the aspects of the event I liked was the Escalation levels. Given the nature of the event, they made sure that the game mode progressed at a natural rate. You couldn’t just drop the bigger nukes straight away and end the game mode, they were restricted until the appropriate time.


Proposed Solution

Now imagine if we could implemented this system in GRB as a way to balance CAS.

  • STAGE 1 - Pure Ground based gameplay. This satisfies a lot of peoples want for a ground based only gamemode. During this time you would only be allowed to spawn Ground assets. This would prevent things like Heli rushes, people who rush 1 cap then J out to get in air assets. Overall this would promote a focus on Ground based gameplay in the ground based gamemode.

  • STAGE 2 - Mixed based gameplay. This part is up for debate. Originally my idea was limit it to Air Assets with A/A only loadouts for lower tiers, with only dumb A/G weapons (Nothing Guided), and Heli’s at the BR’s where Radar AA gets introduced and above (7.3 with the M163 I believe?).

  • STAGE 3 - Final Stage. Unlimited total combined warfare. Anything and everything, go crazy!


Implementation

I can’t remember how this was implemented in the event, but in GRB I can see this either as a Time Gated system, Ticket gated system or a hybrid of both. What I mean by this is the stages could either be set to activate…

  • After a certain time has elapsed
  • After a certain percentage of tickets have been bled
  • After a certain percentage of tickets have been bled, but not before the time has elapsed / vice versa.

Again up for debate is when the stages would activate.

Do we do Stage 2 at 33% tickets, and Stage 3 at 67%?
Or Stage 2 at 50%, and Stage 3 at 70% etc…


Final Thoughts

Honestly I think this could be a good change for GRB and allows for extra levers for Gaijin to pull for balance past just using BR’s and SP cost. Let me know what you think of the idea and any ideas you have to improve it! Thank you! :-)

would need to be tested out first.

We would have to make ground battle last more than 6-8 minutes in top tier and maybe extend the timer to 30 mins

All this will do is just make people wait in the spawn screen until the second CAS becomes available and instead of having to fight one plane at a time you will have to fight an entire horde

Hear me out: Make it so that way only 1 plane and 1 helicopter can be up at once (or any amount below 3). This will prevent that issue and make it a lot easier to still deal with CAS.

SPAA costs would need to be raised proportionally though.

I like that idea too. My only issue is when you get someone highly incompetent at playing anti-air against an average CAS player (talking more around the 10.0 range).

I kinda like Ground Rb the way it is. I would only change 2 things: Take away the aircraft spawnpoint reduction from scouting, the ability is strong enough itself. And make it so that you can grind aircraft with a full lineup. It’s ridiculous that you have to play a completly different mode, just so you can have a competetive line-up with fighters. (Or just add Spaas to air Rb, so everyone will know how it feels like)
