TL;DR: An armored car fitted with a 14.5mm HMG during trials with the PLA.
History:
With the collapse of the USSR in the early 1990s, China’s focus could finally switch from heavily guarding its northern border to other matters. One of these matters was the development of lighter, faster, and easier to maintain military vehicles. And so was born the entire Chinese armored car industry. From there, development of military cars, both armored and unarmored, exploded, with multiple auto manufacturers now shifting much more seriously into their production. One of these manufacturers was the Dongfeng Motor Corporation, who would gain a claim to fame in 2003 with their EQ2050, an almost one-to-one copy of the American Hummer H1, a civilian version of the famous HMMWV, better known as the Humvee. The PLA would trial 57 examples of the EQ2050 in 2004 before accepting the design into widespread service in 2006. From there, Dongfeng would produce several upgrades and designs based on the EQ2050 with several of them also being accepted into PLA service. Not wanting to get pigeonholed into a single design, however, Dongfeng began exploring other, more original designs. They would debut their new EQ2100MCTYB at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show. It was a large APC-like armored car capable of transporting 10 troops and fitted with a mockup or non-functional weapon station on the roof. The vehicle would briefly catch the attention of the PLA, who would acquire two examples in 2017 for trials. Both would be fitted with unmanned turrets, however, only one of them would be armed. This vehicle would armed with a 14.5mm QJC02 heavy machine gun. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, the EQ2100MCTYB would not pass trials with the PLA and would not be accepted into service. This wouldn’t be the end of the story for the EQ2100MCTYB, however. The vehicle’s history would only get more complex and convoluted from here. In 2019, the EQ2100MCTYB would appear again at the… ahem… “2019 12th Annual Academic Conference of the Off-Road Vehicle Technology Branch of the China Society of Automotive Engineers and Military Vehicle Equipment Platform Development Forum”, however, under the new name of EQ2111MCTFL. The vehicle, again, would not gain much attention and would go into hiding once more. Some time in 2020, the vehicle would make its way to the hands of Hubei Off-Road Special Vehicle Co. LTD and would be renamed again to EQ5096MCTSS and would apparently be up for sale to more civilian customers as an “off road vehicle” alongside a seemingly cut down version and 6x6 version of the design. As of 2025, both the original vehicle and the cut down version are no longer listed in the catalog, presumably having been sold. As this vehicle is very poorly documented, it is ultimately unknown if there were differences in specifications with every name change or even if the different names referred to different variants of the design, however, the cut down version does appear to have had a weaker engine. Final note, in 2025, a variant of the EQ2100MCTYB redesigned to better suit riot duties named EQ2091XFB would be purchased by the Moscow Metro Police, finally giving the design some success.
Note: Due to this vehicle’s various names across several years, many sources will mix up the name of the vehicle. It’s important to remember that all these designations, save for maybe EQ2091XFB, basically refer to the same vehicle. I went with the EQ2100MCTYB designation for this suggestion due to it seemingly being the earliest designation of the vehicle and the one closest in terms of timeframe to the PLA trialing the vehicle. It is entirely possible that the PLA trialed vehicles had another ethereal designation unique to them, however, I believe EQ2100MCTYB to be perfectly fine for now.
Place In War Thunder:
Medium to high caliber autocannon speedsters have been steadily carving their own place in the War Thunder meta for the past few years, with the low caliber variety not too far behind. With the EQ2100MCTYB (QJC02), we lower caliber even further while still retaining effectiveness. In fact, we actually, quite paradoxically, increase in penetration with the reduction in caliber since, yes, 14.5mm DGJ02 has a higher penetration (76mm) than 20mm DM63 (66mm). This high penetration paired with a 600RPM ROF would make for a deadly combination in War Thunder’s landscape. Although the EQ2100MCTYB (QJC02) is s tad bigger than the XM800T, it’s still small enough to hide from inattentive eyes and just as fast if not faster in some cases. Playstyle wouldn’t be anything players of ratty vehicles aren’t already familiar with. Spawn in, rush to your favorite rat spot and open up on the sides of the unaware before sculking away to fight another day. As the EQ2100MCTYB (QJC02) is a failed trial vehicle with a relatively strange armament, it would only make sense to see it added as either a premium or event vehicle. At the end of the day, it leans more toward being a gimmick vehicle and there are plenty of other 14.5mm armor armored cars that would make more sense to have in the tree.
