Designation:
The name “EE-17 Sucuri I” and “EE-18 Sucuri II” (its sucessor) are unnoficial, since both the official Engesa brochures and proper technical documentation only calls the vehicles EE-17 Sucuri and EE-18 Sucuri.
The vehicle’s history:
At the end of the 70s, with the success of the EE-9 Cascavel and EE-11 Urutu, Engesa decided to invest in a new vehicle with the concept of a tank destroyer, a vehicle that will provide both high mobility and a powerful armament, being designed specifically to engage and destroy enemy tanks in the battle, with those characteristics in mind the EE-17 Sucuri was born.

Basic characteristics:
The EE-17 Sucuri is a 6x6 Tank Destroyer with a crew of four (driver, gunner, radio operator and commander). The vehicle has a length of 6.35 meters, width of 2.6 meters and height of 2.8 meters (with the gun). The vehicle has a weight in running order of 17.7 tons and a weight (combat weight) of 18.5 tons. the vehicle also stores a total of 43 rounds (23 in the turret and 20 in the hull).

Turret:
The EE-17 Sucuri uses the reliable French oscillating turret FL-12, used in the AMX-13. With an crew of two men (gunner and commander), the turret gives to the vehicle the capacity to use the autoloader system, it also has acess to LRF (TCV29) and NVD. It stores 23 rounds, 12 ready to fire (in the autoloader magazine). The total elevation is 17°30’ (of -5 to 12°30). It is equipped with ten periscopes (1:1 magnification) around the hatches and a monocular telescope (6:1 magnification) for cannon direction. It also carried 4 smoke launchers, 2 on each side of the turret.

Firepower:
The EE-17 Sucuri uses the CN-105 model 57, an powerful low pressure gun that was designed to use HEAT rounds and it has firing rate (electric or mechanical) of eight shots per minute. In addition, it had a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, with a firing rate (electric or mechanical) of 800 rounds per minute and a range of 600m.

Armor:
Its chassis was similar to that used by other vehicles of the company, a monoblock made of welded bimetallic armored plates with thermal and acoustic insulation. It had a door on the left side and another at the rear, as well as a hatch for the driver (with three periscopes) and another for the radio operator. It also had a rear towing hook and four lifting supports.
Suspension:
The vehicle suspension was also derived from the EE-9 Cascavel and EE-11 Urutu models. It had semi-elliptical leaf springs, stabilizer bars, and the rear “boomerang” axle, with lateral blades and an option to lock the differential. The wheels had cast iron spoke hubs and stamped steel rims, fitted with 18-ply bulletproof military tires (size 14.00-20). Like trucks, it had pneumatic brakes, hydraulic steering and a 24V electrical system.

Engine:
The EE-17 Sucuri uses the Detroit Diesel 6V53T, V-six, 5212 cm³ total displacement, two-stroke, turbocharged, water-cooled, Maximum Gross Power (SAE) 300 HP to 2800 RPM. The engine allows the vehicle to reach a maximum speed of 110 km/h on roads and a autonomy of 600km.
