There were no 5.9 secondaries. Only 6-inches later used in Chapayev and Sverdlov.
18 mm is not external armor, but structual steel backing up 327 mm armor. You miscalculate.
Also, why I referring Littorio’s armor as ‘composite’ is due to existence of cement foam used in gap between 70 mm RHA and 280 mm RCA. There is claim that those 250 mm thick cement foam is used to have similar effectiveness as 660 mm air gap. In that case, it could be equivalent to 33 mm RHA as ingame air gap between spaced armour has 0.05 KE multiplier.
As I already saids, 50 mm armor is meaning nothing as it will be overmatched by guns bigger than 350 mm.
yeah i didnt how to translate the 18 mm “plate” but i meaned that
and about the 50 mm plate it is still a plate that can catch some shrapnel and “tank” a bit the blast effect IRL ( it was mostly here to tanks torpedoe ) but still 50 mm is still 50 mm especially when it’s betwen a pretty big air gap. and without forgeting that this plate is behind a lot of armor so it’s still a + to have i guess
Well tbh it’s look cool but that about it … the armor isnt very strong ( as intended ) and basicly the shell are pretty bad with only 540 mm of pen ( because gaijin classified it as a SAP round instead of an AP one ) . They have a good velocity tho and you can have acces to pretty good He round with almost 70 kg of tnt .
Good and Bad - good in that it’s the best we’ll have for France, but it’s pretty bad when compared to it’s contemporaries. The poor survivability and low penetration make it more of a sidegrade in armor and gun performance compared to Lorraine and Bretagne, but the good mobility and hydroplane help a good bit. Overall as i’ve said before, I think it should be treated more as an in game equivalent to Graf Spee or HMS Glorious - glass cruiser like hull with only two turrets, very much a 2nd line support ship.
It’s a shame that the devs are not willing to change the SAP to AP, it would allow Dunkerque to much more comfortably play in it’s playstyle of long range support fire. Right now it’s a ship with very conflicting stats, the guns, gun layout and low pen would make you think that you would play quite aggressively, but the poor ammo layout, low rate of fire and glass hull encourage otherwise.
With the small boost in pen, it would allow us to at least have some more bite at longer ranges - with how poor the survivability is, the ship could probably stay at 6.7 even with the AP.
Which doesn’t mean the shell does not lose penetration while doing so, mind you.
The effective armor for Richelieu @0m for the main plate would be around 340mm to be exact (not counting the 18mm structural steel), with the 50mm plate that would be around 400mm to pen a richelieu (i’m not counting the anti torp bulkead of 40mm, since its main job would be to resist the HE detonation
Although unlike Dunkerque, the front bulkhead is actually quite well armored (around 355mm instead of 210), so angling it would help quite a lot protection wise.
All in all, i’m not too concerned about Richelieu’s protection when it will eventually come to the game. Dunkerque was known to be not very armored, so that’s a different story.
The good : mobility, it turns really well and has decent speed The bad : armor isn’t enough against top tier shells, as expected. It can still tank most cruisers, although they can still get a lucky pen if they hit the 130mm front bulkhead weak spot with only the 50mm torp bulkhead right behind The ugly : the shell lacks quite a chunck of pen compared to IRL (see admiral_bofors calculation).
Perhaps in terms of purpose but certainly not in terms of br, Glorious being at 6.0 is somewhat strange as Graf spee whilst having a worse layout has a much more meta design with great torpedo’s secondaries (comparatively), RoF, handling etc.
Dunkerque outdoes both of these ships wholly though as well as invincible, having more guns, better protection. Perhaps at 6.3 but i’d also probably say she’s better than Queen Mary or Derfflinger.
I mean IRL the dunkerque was litteraly made to outclasses the Deutschland classes in every aspect .
The armor was made to resist every 283 mm german shells and even after the creation of the scharnhorst they wasnt very bothered since dunkerque coould resist his gun while doing a bit of damage .
The 330 mm should be more powerfull as we all know but sadly gaijin cant make a proper classes of shell for unique design like that .those 330 mm shell where made to be able to pen heavy cruiser and some BB BUT was also able to do a lot of damage to light armored ship thanks to his fuze and his 20 kg of HE filler .
I don’t get why they can’t change it to AP. It wouldn’t be too unrealistic since the shell is somewhere between AP and SAP. And especially since this is the best gun France will have till Richelieu. France need something to make them more competitive.
Changing this shell to AP would help a lot.
You could play it like Alaska, staying at the range. Since both have similar armor.
Also I feel like reverse angling(shooting backwards) will be the way. Simce Dunkerque has very good firing angles. So the engine should protect the magazines.
We just need to convince Gaijin to change the shell to AP and we’re good.
With that kind of penetration (900mm) I don’t think Italy will have any problems dealing with Yamato lol
Nearly 800mm of Richelieu is still very good.
Richelieu will have better post pen damage with neary 3 times more TNT than Littorio class bb’s.
And I’m sure that’s gonna be good enough to deal with Yamato.
I noticed many people seem scared of Yamato. It’s all or nothing armor scheme, that will have like 60 extra belt armor compared to Arizona, but you won’t be able to angle Yamato effectively because of corner plates(tiger1 p situation). So you have 60mm extra belt armor Arizona, but this time facing much more dangerous guns(latest bb’s guns).
I just don’t know if Yamato armor is angled, and where the ammo is stored? Because that can change the situation.
I would personally wait and see what Gaijin has to say about armor and shell pen for each of these future battleships. Because they’ve shown time and time again that “their numbers” aren’t the ones we seem to find ourselves.
And I’m eager to see how fair and realistic the Sovetsky Soyuz will be as well.
Angled belt definitely gonna help at the range. That would be amazing if not those front corner plates… Not sure if they’re are angled. And where the ammo is stored is important.
But this is Dunkerque discussion, so I don’t want to derail it towards Yamato.
Staying on topic. Currently Dunkerque with SAP should be able to deal with Yamato at 5000m.
And you can be sure that’s what she gonna meet at the uptier.
