Douglas A-20H-5 Havoc
Hey everybody. I’d like to suggest the specific A-20H-5 Havoc for the US aviation tree. I believe the A-20 series is currently underrepresented in War Thunder, so I’ve planned to suggest The A-20H and the other variants to help complete the family of this iconic light attack bomber.
The A-20H was essentially an A-20G equipped with uprated R-2600-29 engines that offered improved performance to compensate for the heavier loadouts of late-war variants. I’m suggesting the A-20H-5 specifically because this block included provisions for fragmentation bomb clusters, which I believe would make a nice addition to its available armament options in-game.
History
As the A-20G neared the end of its production run, Douglas introduced a new variant of the Havoc series incorporating an uprated engine. The A-20H replaced the 1,600-horsepower Wright R-2600-23 Cyclone engines used in the A-20G with upgraded R-2600-29 models producing 1,700 horsepower each. This engine change was introduced to offset the increasing weight of the Havoc series, which had steadily grown as the aircraft took on heavier combat loads, improved armor, and more advanced systems. The goal was to improve takeoff and emergency power, particularly in forward combat zones.
The first A-20H was delivered on February 29, 1944, several months before the final A-20G rolled off the line in June of that year, resulting in a brief overlap in production. A total of 412 A-20H aircraft were built, and they were divided into four production blocks, each incorporating incremental updates:
A-20H-1-DO: The baseline production version, functionally identical to the A-20G-45-DO, with the primary difference being the upgraded R-2600-29 engines.
A-20H-5-DO: Similar to the -1-DO block but fitted with provisions for fragmentation bomb racks and a number of minor internal changes.
A-20H-10-DO: Reverted to the earlier 1,600-hp R-2600-23 engines and was equipped with flame dampers, indicating these aircraft were intended for night operations or training use.
A-20H-15-DO: Returned to the more powerful 1,700-hp R-2600-29 engines, along with several minor internal refinements.
Together with the A-20K, the glass-nosed bombing variant derived from the A-20H, these late-production Havocs were widely distributed under the Lend-Lease program. Of the total production, 140 aircraft were delivered to the Soviet Union, 90 to the Royal Air Force, and 30 to Brazil. The remaining airframes were allocated to the United States, with 145 retained for domestic duties, 188 assigned to combat units in Europe, and 232 deployed to the Pacific Theater.
