Description: The Dornier Do217 was a twin-engine German night fighter developed during the Second World War. The J2 made it’s first flight in July 1942, with the main difference compared to the J1 being the FuG 202 Lichtenstein air search radar, with also the removal of the possibility of using the bomb bay. In the same year, the Regia Aeronautica acquired a total of 6 J1 and 6 J2 to equip the 235° squadriglia, which would have been one of the few Italian night fighter squadrons. The 12 units were delivered from 1942 to 1943 and performed various interception missions, with only one of them leading to the destruction of a British Avro Lanchaster by a J1. Unfortunately, due to various factors, such as the machines quality, the crew training, and the conditions of J2’s radars, this led to a low performance by the squadron, with only an enemy aircraft shot down but also suffering a single loss. By the armistice in September 1943, 11 aircraft were still in service, with 5 being operative and 6 under maintenance. Their fate is not documented, as there is not data regarding their possible use by the ANR, but they could have probably be destroyed, captured by the Germans, or scrapped.
Why it should be in game: It could be a good veichle for low tier in the Italian tree, and it would also be one of the very few night fighter Italy ever operated.
Once again no. Italy doesnt need to be Germany 2. Italy has its own Twin Engine Heavy fighters.
Why not simply add Italy back to Germany again if you want pretty much half the german Tree in italy.
I’ve done this suggestion like others because I wanted to suggest most of the veichles used by Italy, for giving to the devs but mainly to the people here an idea about what Italy used, never impling that every single one of them should come to the game. Also, what about all the German mains asking for F16, F20, F15 and F18? Should the german tt be added to USA because they wanted some foreign veichles?
Its not just about the 3 planes, but also the tanks. Its all just getting thinned out by C&P. And there are also already other German C&P planes. There is just other more interesting own Italian stuff.
Right now the only Italian used german copy paste in the Italian air tt is the Bf109 G14 AS, and for the tanks we have the stug, a panzer III and a panzer IV. 4 veichles doesn’t sound like a lot.
Ahh, so You are suggesting an aircraft never used by the germans but only fitted with german markings for marketing. If You really wanted an Italian aircraft used by Germany (and there are many) You could have chosed a re2002, a G55 or re2001.
One quick addendum here, as I mentioned on the J1 suggestion. In its collection, the Museo Storico dell’Aeronautica Millitare possesses several components from Italian Do 217s, including the complete aft fuselage of a Do 217. I’m unsure if it is from a J1 or a J2. That said, it’s neat nonetheless that the only surviving elements of the Do 217 as a type exist in Italy, of all places
