There’s even a couple jets as well. The F-104 and F-105 come to mind.
Here’s the F6F-5N and the A2D-1 compared with the F-16CM PoBIT

Oh and the F6F-5N also somehow has IFF, despite that literally not existing when the plane was made
i’m gonna throw my hat into the ring and say, the F6Fs has a lot smaller area and distance to scan as well as no up and down scan, just straight forward area scan
either: it is a radar that uses a vibrating flexible disc (I saw something about it a while ago, not sure if this is even a thing), or it was added before gaijin knew much about radars so they just made it really fast and never changed it.
but realistically AESA radars should have basically instantaneous scan rates as well, gaijin just be artificially nerfing them in favor of not adding true PESA because russian jets are the only thing that would be affected, negatively.
The scan area of the F6F-5N is larger than the PoBIT. 120x60 for the F6F-5N, and 60x30 for the PoBIT. And the F6F-5N uses a mechanical scan radar, which in no world would it ever be able to scan faster than an AESA or PESA radar
true, but the distance (how far out) it scans is magnitudes shorter, that and if the little radar sight in the cockpit worked, it would show a illuminated silhouette of the aircraft that’s in its sights, not to mention its also a lot simpler radar compared to the POBIT, as well as not being able to lock (as it should be just a search radar)
The range the radar scans at does not affect how fast it scans. I can also put the PoBIT radar to its minimum range and the F6F-5N out to it’s max and the F6F-5N still scans faster
Yes the PoBIT’s radar is far more advanced. Since it uses an Electronically Scanned Array, the only limit to how fast it can scan is how fast it can process the data. Compared to a mechanical scan radar where you have to deal with stuff like the inertia of the radar dish.
It can lock though. That little green box at the bottom middle of the radar display is the area where it can lock a plane. Outside of that box and it can’t lock them.
Think of it this way. The basic prop radars are like flash lights. They can be very bright flashlights, but they can’t do much else.
in reality it shouldn’t, as technically its nothing more than a illuminator for the sight, however, ive only seen the actual flight manual page for it but ive found something similar

The very bright flashlight still has to turn manually, which slows it down much more than turning it via just changing the output power/phase of a few of the light bulbs.
Idk why you’re adding more into it but the point is, the prop radars are essentially just search lights. They can emit and see radar returns and that’s it. It doesn’t have any of the features of an aesa or even typical mechanical radar like fire control, multitarget track while scan, etc
not to mention
this guy also made a valid point
Irl radars aren’t “faster scan equals more advanced”, because there’s things such as dwell time where you want your radar to have looked into certain areas long enough to get a return, instead of essentially scanning an area fast and potentially missing targets.
It’s because I was extending your analogy of it just being a basic flashlight to an aesa radar. No matter how basic the functions of the radar are, it still functions on the same principal and it still has constraints it has to deal with. Like the weight/inertia of the radar dish, the power of the motors moving it, and staying within certain weight limits. And early radars like this one were INCREDIBLY heavy to begin with compared to more modern ones.
An AESA radar has none of that. It is just a static, flat panel with thousands of tiny antennas. The only thing limiting the scan of an AESA radar is how quickly the computer can process the data and how quickly the computer can tell those tiny antennas to transmit louder or quieter or in a different phase. So it should be scanning much faster.
Honestly that’s probably it, but I still think it’s stupid
welcome to WT, anything that makes USSR/Russia slightly less is tossed off unless they get something equivalent or better
You… do know Russia also has AESA right? In the MiG-35? Also every higher-end radar including mech ones are gimped. It’s not Russia exclusive.
like i said, equivalent or better, most or at least some of their modern aircraft still use PESAs, but the difference between AESA and PESAs arn’t modeled
You… do know Russia also has AESA right? In the MiG-35?
AFAIK, Russia doesn’t use the advertised AESA radar for their domestic MiG-35s, the AESA was advertised for exports.
I wasn’t referring to any IRL context. In game russia has AESA.

I know that just cranking up the speed to 11 is not really a great idea for IRL radars. But if you take a peek at the clips, the F6F-5N takes about 1 second to scan its entire search area, and the A2D-1 takes about a third of that amount of time.
That amount of time for the PoBIT gives you about 2 horizontal sweeps. Not even a third of its entire scan zone. The PoBIT (and every other ESA radar in game) should AT LEAST be matching these props
