Does someone mind explaining why there are (at least) 2 props in game with radars that scan faster than any AESA radar in game does?

So what? you’re comparing a short range flashlight to an undermodelled AESA system as a whole. They are not comparable.

(a complete sentence)

You’re still comparing two wholly different things. A high end camera still has worse refresh rate than your literal eyeballs, but would you claim it can see less stuff than you do? That’s what you’re trying to do with these radars.

They aren’t 2 different things. Both are radars. It’s just that the modern ones have some fancy computers attached to them process the data better. They haven’t turned they modern ones into uber quantum subspace sensors. They still just emit a radio signal and listen for a return.

And now you are comparing 2 different things (also high end cameras absolutely can and do have higher refresh rates than your eyes)

Two. different. types. of. radars. You’re comparing something that can barely see a smudge within 9km to one that can guide missiles within 1m accuracy to 100km.

Your eyeballs and a camera are also both optical sensors. They still aren’t the same thing. Radar then and now are vastly different technologies. Saying they’re the same is like saying a cup with a rope is the same as an iphone.

They are not “different types” of radars. The only difference is the modern ones have fancy computers attached to them to help them operate more effectively. And the range they operate is not relevant. Both point a beam of radio waves at something to detect it via an echo. The modern one should be able to do it faster since it doesn’t have to deal with actually pointing a heavy antenna dish at what you want to see.

An actual different type of radar would be something like an air to air radar vs an early warning/air surveillance radar. Those actually do a different job from each other.

By that logic, your computer is a hunk of metals with fancy silicon attached to them. An oversimplification and reductionist take to radar advancements.

It absolutely is. It does the exact same job as the very first microchip. Execute binary instructions. It just does it much faster nowadays because of advancements in processor design

Yeah, now I know you have no clue how computers work. Of course “prop radar scan faster than aesa so weird” when you have no clue about the actual advancements and working principles beyond the bare basics.

Fyi, your prop radar still can’t update as fast as aesa in game:

I probably know more than you do. As part of my computer engineering course last year, we had to design our own basic functioning processor. I would like to see you do that from scratch

Put your AESA radar into SRC PD instead of TWS

Ok… And I graduated Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. This is supposed to impress me how?

oh the SRC PD that’s wrongly modelled like everyone pointed out but you didn’t listen? The very same SRC PD that’s slower than a mech’s radar? That didn’t ring any bells at all?

Idk why we’re comparing badly modelled SRC PD instead of the proper TWS mode. That’s just cherry picking.

And fundamentally, the two radars are still different. One is just an emitter that blasts out short range radio waves directly in front of it and receive the reflection (hence the fast "refresh), while the other is a full blown sensor suite that has many more features beyond “shoot radio beam front”.

I was literally pointing this out with this exact post. Please point me to where someone pointed out the same thing I did and “ignored” them.

Because the issue is with the scan speed. Not the soft lock ability. With TWS, once your radar picks up a target, it soft locks it giving you constant updates while it is still visible. This ability is not what the post is about. The scan speed effects how quickly your radar initially picks up the target. A radar that takes 10 seconds to scan its whole FOV will take much longer to initially pick up the target than one that can do a full scan every 1/3 of a second.

It’s not cherry picking. It is literally what I made this post about.

Then why are you still at it?

TWS updates everything, not just the one dude you’re soft locking. Multi-target soft lock was removed from the game for a long time now. And if you played with AESA radars you’d notice that despite the “refresh rate” of its TWS being similar to mech, the update speed is still actually faster.

It is cherry picking. You’re using a badly modelled feature as a comparison. The slow “speed” of aesa , afaik, is only there to artificially introduce pickup delay of targets on TWS. It is in no regard realistic.

Because you keep coming in here claiming “that radar is old so you can’t say a new radar scans faster than it”. Also I’m still waiting.

It was not. Every time you have your radar in TWS mode and there are targets on it, that is a soft lock. The difference is that IRL the radar does not automatically soft lock everything it sees. The pilot has to do that for the targets he wants

That’s because every target you see in TWS mode is soft locked. When someone is soft locked via TWS, AESA radars have a small portion of the RX/TX antennas in the array start tracking that target, instead of scanning like the rest of the radar. That is why AESA radars can maintain updates on a target within it’s FOV but outside of the current scan angle, and M-scan radars can’t

When this is the exact thing I made the post about (the badly modeled feature), it is not cherry picking.

This is literally what this entire post is about. The slow scan speeds of AESA radars is not realistic. I just brought in those props as a comparison to show how ridiculous it is.

Also slightly unrelated, one of those props somehow has IFF despite the fact that it would not be invented for another decade or two

It is not. What people refer as a soft lock is the person being selected on the radar screen at any given time. And multi-target soft lock did exist, during the early F-14A days.

You do know soft lock is not unique to ESA radars only, yes? The method is different sure, but it is still a softlock, done through TWS. an ESA radar have extra antennas that does the tracking job, while mech radars rely on computer memory to calculate target trajectories and save target positioning.

Yeah, wouldn’t be the first time war thunder make something up
